Husband-and-Wife Franchisors Kay and Joseph Barker Lead Musicologie’s Growth with a Unique Vision
Kay and Joseph Barker (above) believe music is for everyone, not just the naturally gifted. “Talent for music is a myth. We are all musicians at heart,” says Kay. “Anyone can learn to play.” This is the premise behind their emerging franchise opportunity, Musicologie, a music school for all ages and abilities. “We realized there was a need for music studios with more flexibility than what has been traditionally offered.”
Kay and Joseph have loved music for as long as they can remember, both starting piano lessons at a young age. However, Kay faced some discouragement along the way. “People told me I was talented, but that wasn’t helpful at all. It made me complacent and actually held me back in a lot of ways,” she says.

The couple met in college, where they began performing together. Eventually, they married and toured the country with their folk/pop band, Bella Ruse, opening for acts like Walk the Moon and Sarah McLachlan. To supplement their income during this time, Kay discovered another passion — teaching. Between tours, she began offering private lessons and had an epiphany. “Our goal has always been to make music,” Kay says, “but when I started teaching lessons, I realized that teaching was what I truly wanted to do.”
This newfound love for teaching inspired the Barkers to open their first music studio, Musicologie, in 2014 in Grandview Heights, Ohio. They envisioned a space where teachers and students could come together, united by their shared love for music.
Building a Thriving Community Through Music
The Barkers focused on building a team of passionate, like-minded teachers who shared their excitement for music education and community. “We wanted our teachers to be the heartbeat of Musicologie,” says Kay.
Musicologie studios offer a full range of classes for nearly everyone. There are mommy and me classes for the youngest musicians and the Rockstar Program for aspiring performers. “We believe that music is for everyone, regardless of age or skill level,” said Joseph. With programs designed to inspire confidence and creativity, Musicologie’s mission is to nurture a lifelong love of music. Students can explore a variety of instruments and styles, including piano, guitar, drums and voice. The studios also offer summer camps and an accelerated piano lab that helps students develop independent practice skills and achieve faster progress.
At the core of Musicologie’s success is its unique teaching philosophy, the Musicologie Method®. “It’s all about creating a safe environment and making learning fun,” Kay explains. The method encourages students to play music they love while incorporating games and playful strategies to guide their progress. This student-centered approach has made Musicologie a favorite among both kids and parents.
In addition to fostering a love of music, the Barkers also recognize the broader benefits of music education. Research shows that participation in music can have a positive impact on academic achievement, especially in teenagers. According to Psychology Today, teens who are actively involved in music tend to perform better academically, particularly in math, science, and English. Kay and Joseph have seen this firsthand in their students, noting how music lessons often improve focus, discipline and problem-solving skills.
Growing the Business
As the demand for their unique approach to music education grew, so did their vision. In 2018, Musicologie opened a second studio and welcomed their first franchisees in early 2024. “They were parents of one our students and true believers in our method.” The couple opened two studios in Columbus.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, Musicologie didn’t slow down. “We transitioned to online lessons, trained our teachers, and showed our students that music could still be a bright spot in their lives,” Joseph explained. Their quick response led to the opening of two new studios in Cleveland and Cincinnati within the same year, proving that even in tough times, Musicologie thrives.
Recognizing the need for continued growth, Musicologie recently partnered with REP’M Group, a leader in franchise development, to scale the business nationwide. “We realized we needed to amplify our strengths by partnering with people who fill in the gaps,” Joseph explained. “We focus on coaching franchisees while REP’M helps us with the rest.”

A Franchise Opportunity with Passion and Purpose
With its unique approach to music education, the Barkers believe the Musicologie franchise offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity. The membership-based model provides recurring revenue, and the inclusive environment cultivates a multi-generational client base. But it’s more than just the business potential that excites the Barkers about Musicologie. “It’s about making a difference in communities,” says Kay.
Franchisees don’t need a musical background, but they should have a passion for music and a desire to make a positive impact. “We don’t expect franchisees to teach,” Joseph explains. “This business is designed for those who believe in the power of music and want to bring that joy to their communities. We provide world-class support, from teacher recruitment to real estate management and digital marketing. We approach franchising the same way we approach teaching,” Joseph adds. “It’s about creating a safe environment and having fun while you grow your business.”
Owning a Musicologie franchise is incredibly rewarding, says Kay. “It’s not just about running a business; it’s about building something that’s yours, making an impact, and creating opportunities for musicians and teachers.”
Musicologie is poised for significant growth, aiming to expand to 500 locations nationwide. “We’re passionate about showing people that music is for everyone,” says Kay. “We’re all musicians at heart, and we want to inspire both kids and adults to discover the joy of music.”
