More Men and Women Are Choosing Non-Invasive, Natural-Looking Maintenance Over Drastic Cosmetic Procedures
More and more women and men of all ages are seeking aesthetic treatments as part of their regular self-care regimens, and they’re opting for more natural-looking maintenance as opposed to more dramatic cosmetic surgery.
“Patients are now requesting quick, non-invasive procedures with minor downtime and very little risk. As a general rule, the needle is replacing the scalpel,” according to the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.
Harvey Hillyer, founder of dermani MEDSPA, agrees. “Our customer now sees our services of cosmetic injectables, skin rejuvenation services and laser hair removal as a part of their recurring self-care routines similar to getting their nails done and hair cut.”
Hillyer is among other experts who say “less is more” when it comes to cosmetic treatments. “They want a more natural looking maintenance style of aesthetics versus the drastic plastic surgery-style aesthetic service,” Hillyer says.
Demand Surges for Medspa Services
The global medical spa market size was valued at U.S. $16.4 billion in 2022 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 14.97% from 2023 to 2030, according to Grand View Research.
The demand for medspa treatments has exploded for a few reasons – one being that, during the pandemic lockdown, people simply got tired of looking tired and older than they felt.
“Beauty-related services including luxury spas, salons, nonsurgical skincare and specialized hair services rebounded swiftly post-Covid thanks to pent-up demand for these services caused by pandemic restrictions,” according to the International Franchising Association’s 2024 Franchising Economic Outlook.
Another factor contributing to the boom in medspa services, Hillyer says, is the increased popularity of social media and online meetings via Zoom and other platforms. “Self-care in regard to how we keep our face and body looking good is vital,” he says. “Just as we wouldn’t show up to work with hair uncut, nails untrimmed or clothes mismatched, in this day and age we also need to have our face and body looking presentable. Each year the resolution gets better and better on our computers, TVs and iPhones! Thank you, Apple!”
Making High-End Spa Services an Affordable Luxury
Medspa services, including injectables, chemical peels, laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments have also become more accessible, which has been the mission of dermani MEDSPA since its founding in 2013, Hillyer says.

“For example, as a top 25 provider in the United States out of 50,000 providers, we are able to purchase Botox® and Juvederm® at a lower cost than our competitors, and we pass this savings along to our franchise owners and ultimately our customers,” Hillyer says.
According to a medspa market forecast published in October 2023 by technavio, customers’ price sensitivity will be a key driver in the industry’s continued growth.
But even those who can afford the finest in cosmetic treatments are opting for a self-care maintenance regimen over drastic cosmetic surgery. Entrepreneur and lifestyle innovator Martha Stewart, now 82, denies having had a facelift – a question she gets frequently. Instead, she prefers non-invasive procedures. Her dermatologist, Dr. Dan Belkin, has strategically used Botox, fillers, lasers and skin-tightening treatments to maintain Stewart’s youthful appearance, according to The Martha Stewart Podcast.
Top Medspa Treatments
According to AmSpa, the American Med Spa Association, the most popular treatments are:
- Chemical peels are used to improve the appearance of skin on the face, hands, or neck.
- Aesthetician services involve skincare and beauty treatments such as facials and hair removal through electrolysis, waxing or other techniques.
- Botulinum toxin injections, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 to treat frown lines, are commonly known as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin.
- Microdermabrasion, a method of exfoliation using a minimally abrasive instrument to sand the skin gently, treats light scarring, discoloration and sun damage, and stretch marks.
- Photo-facial pulsed light (IPL), or laser skin rejuvenation, laser resurfacing, or photorejuvenation, is used in a variety of treatments, including hair removal and photo facials.
When considering a new medspa treatment, Hillyer stresses that a trend is not a fad, which tends to come and go.
