When Raul Rodriguez and Jorge Campos opened their first Movita Juice Bar in 2015, their health-focused business concept was considered niche. “Many consumers were just beginning to learn about the benefits of fresh juice, what superfoods were or why ingredients mattered so much beyond taste,” Campos says. “Fast forward to today, and the shift has been remarkable. Consumers are significantly more educated, more label-conscious and far more intentional about what they put into their bodies. People now actively seek beverages and meals that offer specific benefits — energy, immunity, gut health, mental clarity, hydration and recovery — not just calories.”
Movita Juice Bar offers fresh, made-to-order smoothies, juices, teas, bowls and healthy toasts. Nothing is processed, frozen or pasteurized. Franchising since 2023, the brand has rapidly expanded to 28 open locations with more than 11 in development throughout the brand’s home state of California, as well as in Texas and Florida. Movita Juice Bar’s popularity mirrors the explosive growth of the global wellness economy estimated at $6.8 trillion in 2025 and projected to reach $9.8 trillion by 2029, according to the Global Wellness Institute.
Doing Well and Doing Good
Movita Juice Bar co-founders Raul Rodriguez and Jorge Campos
The founders’ vision for Movita went beyond creating a winning business concept. Both had achieved professional success — Rodriguez as an entrepreneur with experience as a restaurant consultant, and Campos in real estate and finance. Rodriguez recalls his friend Campos suggesting a new venture, a business that not only did well, but also did good for others. The name derived from “more” and “vita,” which is Latin for “life.”
The inspiration for the concept resulted from a health crisis. Years earlier, Campos’ young daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor. During her difficult but ultimately successful recovery, her doctor recommended that she consume more fresh vegetables and fruits, and forgo processed foods. Campos and his family took that advice to heart.
Initially, the Movita Juice Bar team had to educate customers about the benefits of functional ingredients and processes. Rodriguez recalls questions from skeptical customers, like, “Why can’t I just have orange juice?” and having to explain that orange juice combined with carrot, apple and celery, for example, is much more nutritious than simple OJ, which is mostly sugar with vitamin C and water.
Confidence and Commitment
Campos says he and Rodriguez genuinely believed in the brand’s health-driven mission from day one. “We were personally living the lifestyle — focused on training, nutrition and long-term health — so we felt confident that others would eventually follow the same path. We knew adoption wouldn’t happen overnight. Our approach was to stay consistent, deliver real quality, and educate customers through our products and our teams. Over time, that consistency built trust. Looking back, we didn’t see Movita as a trend-based concept. We saw it as a long-term lifestyle brand, and that conviction helped us push through the early years.”
The founders also sought to develop a business model as healthy as their products. “For franchisees, Movita offers a proven operating system, strong brand positioning and a concept that aligns with where consumer demand is heading. It’s a business built around wellness, not indulgence, which creates strong brand loyalty and repeat visits,” Campos says. “We also place heavy emphasis on operational simplicity, supply chain consistency and scalable systems — which are critical for long-term franchise success.”
Wellness Goes Mainstream
The partners’ vision proved prescient. “We’ve watched the conversation evolve from, ‘Is this healthy?’ to, ‘What does this do for me?’” Campos says, explaining consumer demand for functional beverages and foods. “That evolution is a big part of what defines today’s wellness economy. What once required explanation is now expected, and Movita was fortunate to be positioned early on as a brand built around that philosophy.”
Functional beverages and foods are defined as having ingredients that go beyond providing basic nutrition to potentially enhancing health or preventing disease. BeverageDaily, an industry publication, reports that “functionality is now making its way into every beverage category,” as one of the top trends for 2026. “Consumers now demand more than hydration: They’re looking for drinks that deliver energy, support cognitive health, and offer enhanced hydration or mood-altering benefits.”
Gen Z Influence
Campos and Rodriguez acknowledge that health-conscious consumers in the Gen Z demographic (those born roughly between 1996 and 2010) have been instrumental in driving the trend toward functional beverages and foods. Research shows Gen Z consumers and millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) are increasingly forgoing alcohol in favor of functional beverages.
“Younger consumers are prioritizing mental clarity, physical performance and overall wellness in a way previous generations did not. Functional beverages align perfectly with that mindset — they offer a social experience without compromising health goals,” Campos says.
Beverage Boom
In addition to its focus on health and nutrition, Movita’s model has aligned with other aspects of today’s “beverage boom,” including:
- Personalization. “Customers can choose from curated menu items or customize their smoothies, bowls and juices to match their individual goals,” Campos says.
- Flavor innovation. “We use high-quality produce, functional ingredients, and thoughtfully developed recipes that balance taste and nutrition,” he says. “We also see functional beverages becoming more sophisticated, better tasting and more accessible, which accelerates adoption. Just like energy drinks evolved years ago, functional beverages are now evolving into a broad category that includes hydration, adaptogens, protein, probiotics and superfoods.”
- Convenience. “Movita was built with a simple belief: that convenient food can also be genuinely healthy,” Campos says. “As the wellness economy continues to grow, we feel fortunate to be part of shaping what the next generation of fast-casual dining looks like — transparent, functional and purpose-driven.”
What’s Next
Campos and Rodriguez see the wellness economy growing and evolving, and they plan to continue innovating to serve customers and franchise owners. “We’re especially proud of our continued integration of functional superfoods and nutrient-dense ingredients such as plant-based proteins, adaptogens, antioxidant-rich fruits, and gut-friendly components,” Campos says. “Equally important is our focus on preparation methods that preserve nutritional integrity, including raw juice techniques and fresh-to-order blending.
“Innovation for us isn’t about chasing novelty; it’s about refining processes that deliver real benefits while maintaining exceptional flavor and consistency,” he says. “Our goal is to keep evolving with our customers while staying true to our roots: helping people live healthier lives, one drink and one bowl at a time.”
