Entrepreneurs Build Growth With Scalable Air Duct Cleaning Franchise Opportunity
It only took a split second for Richard Watson (above, left) to realize he had found his next business venture. Stopped at a red light, he spotted a Dryer Vent Wizard® truck passing by and the opportunity was too good to ignore. He immediately saw the potential in the dryer vent cleaning brand. “I snapped a picture of it, sent it to my business partner and said, ‘We gotta do this,’” he says.
As fate would have it, that moment came in early 2020, just weeks before Neighborly® acquired Dryer Vent Wizard. Neighborly was already a familiar name to Watson and his business partner, Davis Goodson (above, right), who were already running a successful Aire Serv® franchise — another Neighborly brand — for 18 years.
Three years after spotting that truck, the duo made their move, purchasing their first Dryer Vent Wizard franchise, covering part of their existing Aire Serv territory in Wilmington, N.C. Before long, they expanded, taking over the entire coastal region down to the South Carolina border. “It was a no-brainer. We loved Neighborly and had a great experience with Aire Serv,” Watson says. Their confidence in the brand has only grown. Most recently, they purchased a second Dryer Vent Wizard franchise that covers the other half of their Aire Serv territory down the Wilmington coast.
A Streamlined, Scalable Business
Dryer Vent Wizard specializes in cleaning, repairing and installing dryer vent systems to improve efficiency and reduce fire hazards. Watson was drawn to its straightforward business model. “Starting the dryer vent cleaning business was so simple,” he says. “The startup costs and complexity are minimal.”
But for Watson, it’s about more than just business — it’s about making a difference. Every service call has the potential to prevent a disaster. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 14,000 fires involving clothes dryers are reported each year, causing an estimated $222 million in property damage, hundreds of injuries and even loss of life. The leading cause? Failure to clean dryer vents. “There’s something really rewarding about knowing that what we do helps prevent fires,” Watson says.
That sense of purpose makes the business even more fulfilling. And since the work itself is simple to learn, expanding the team is just as easy. “Training new employees is a weeklong process, and that’s it,” Watson explains. “As long as the candidate is somewhat mechanically inclined and can talk to customers, they can do this job.” Franchisees also benefit from Dryer Vent Wizard’s extensive support system, which includes marketing assistance and business coaching.
The market potential is another major advantage. “Everybody thinks dryer vent cleaning is just for homes, but there’s a huge demand from commercial clients like apartment complexes, property managers, hotels, salons, pet groomers and so much more,” Watson says. “Vacation rentals and Airbnbs also represent a major opportunity.” For Watson, joining Neighborly was a game-changer. “The franchise business coaches, the marketing department, the sister brands — those relationships make the franchise. And of course, we can use our extensive customer database that we have built for Aire Serv over the years and market to those customers for Dryer Vent Wizard.”
The Power of Neighborly
The camaraderie among Neighborly franchisees is another huge benefit. “If you own an independent business, you can’t just call your competition to bounce ideas off them. But with your sister franchises, you can,” Watson says. Neighborly brands often work together, referring business and collaborating on marketing.
Watson believes anyone considering a Dryer Vent Wizard franchise should take full advantage of the support system. “You have to put effort into marketing and customer outreach,” he says. “For those willing to follow the system, the franchise offers a proven, profitable business model.”
