“Going all in means we’re burning the boats — we’re not going back,” says John Evans founder and CEO of EverLine Coatings and Services. That’s how he looks at business ownership and it’s a philosophy that shaped the pavement-maintenance brand.

Franchising was always part of Evans’ life. He grew up just outside Ottawa, Ontario, where his parents were multi-unit franchise owners. “I was exposed to SOPs and systems from a young age,” he says. “My parents’ businesses gave me an inside look at how franchising works and what it takes to succeed.”

In college, Evans became a College Pro Painters franchisee. “That was where I really learned what it takes to run a business — marketing, sales, managing people and delivering results,” he says. “It showed me I wanted to keep going down the entrepreneurial path.”

That early hands-on experience laid the foundation for EverLine Coatings and Services. In 2012, after being introduced to the pavement-marking trade at a franchise expo, he launched EverLine Coatings and Services in Canada. Coming from the painting world, line striping felt like a natural extension, but what grabbed his attention was the opportunity. “It was a market full of unsophisticated competitors that weren’t so strong at communication or technology. I saw a chance to do things differently.”

Evans was also drawn to the massive potential of the coatings industry. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global paints and coatings market was valued at more than $206 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach nearly $304 billion by 2032. Within that broader market, the pavement-marking coatings segment is expected to exceed $8.5 billion by 2030, driven by infrastructure investment and ongoing demand for maintenance. “That kind of market potential shows just how much opportunity there is for our franchisees,” Evans says.

The Franchise Opportunity

EverLine has since become one of the leading pavement-maintenance franchises in North America. The brand’s services go beyond painting lines. “We do sealcoating, asphalt repair, crack filling, signage — all the things that keep a property safe and looking sharp,” Evans says. “Parking lots don’t stay fresh forever, so it’s recurring work. That means our franchisees build lasting relationships and repeat revenue streams.”

As a leader, Evans focuses on making EverLine a platform for others to grow. “Our franchisees are building enterprise businesses. They start with small crews, but the model is built for scale. As they grow, they bring on salespeople, operations managers  and administrative support. That’s how they turn it into something that can run without them in the day-to-day.”

Today, EverLine has 125 franchisees across Canada and the U.S. running more than 400 territories. “Our American franchisees are already hitting larger revenue sizes than we anticipated,” he says. “It proves the demand is there and our model works.  When franchisees commit and follow the system, they can build something incredible.”

You can’t play small if you want to build something big.

Q&A: John Evans, EverLine Coatings and Services

1. What do you love about franchising?

Someone else can take your recipe, in a different market with a different background, and succeed. That means you’re creating opportunity, not just revenue. Watching our franchisees hire teams, build relationships and create lasting businesses is what keeps me excited every day.

2. Who in franchising do you admire and why?

One of the leaders I’ve always looked up to is Charlie Chase at FirstService Brands. He’s built an incredible organization while staying approachable and humble. I admire leaders like that — people who scale big but never lose sight of culture and people.

3. Please share your favorite mantra or motto in business.

I love the Latin saying, ‘fortes fortuna adiuvat,’ meaning ‘fortune favors the bold.’ It’s something I’ve lived by. Starting EverLine and later franchising it required taking risks and stepping into the unknown. You can’t play small if you want to build something big.

4. What do you consider your greatest career accomplishment?

Team at Everline Coatings and Services franchise

For me, it’s scaling EverLine Coatings and Services from a one-truck operation into a franchise system with over 400 locations across Canada and the U.S. We built it from scratch, proved it worked, and now it’s growing faster than I imagined. Seeing our franchisees already outperforming expectations is  the most rewarding part.
