The history of Labor Day goes back to 1894, when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law in order to mend ties with American workers -many as young as 5 or 6 — who were adversely affected by poor working conditions, long hours and more. Since then, Labor Day has always been observed on the first Monday in September.
