On July 12th, The Doughnut Franchise Will Celebrate its 87th Birthday with a Sweet Special

When was the last time you paid 87 cents for a dozen glazed doughnuts? NO, not a single doughnut, but a full dozen… Well, you probably never did, if you’re being honest. So this Friday may be your lucky day if you have a Krispy Kreme franchise within reasonable proximity. That’s because the famous melt-in-your-mouth treats, kryptonite to any weight-loss diet, are marking their 87th birthday on July 12 with the special 87-cents-a-dozen doughnut deal good for that day only.

If you have a soft spot for doughnuts — especially those ultra-soft ones available when the hot-and-ready sign flashes at a Krispy Kreme store — then you’re pretty typical, actually. According to WorldMetrics.com, Americans consume more than 10 billion doughnuts a year, which works out to be about 30 doughnuts per person per year. And Krispy Kreme says it sold 1.6 billion of those doughnuts in 2022.

Krispy Kreme’s Birthday Deal

To get the 87-cent bargain, you need to buy any dozen doughnuts at the regular price. There’s a per-customer limit of two dozen costing 87 cents when the purchase is made inside a store or at a store’s drive-through lane. There’s a single-dozen limit when taking advantage of the deal for pickup or when you’re having the treats delivered. Customers who place online orders will need to enter the special code BDAY, USA Today noted in an article this week.

“Treating our fans on our birthday is a longtime tradition,” said Dave Skena, who is the global chief brand officer for the Krispy Kreme franchise. It’s “a sweet way for us to thank our fans who have kept us going all these years.”

Krispy Kreme July Specials

The franchise is famous for rewarding its customers with sporadic specials. And during July, there are actually a couple more deals for Krispy Kreme customers. To qualify, they must be members of the brand’s loyalty program and make additional purchases. (You can sign up for the program on the brand’s website or by downloading the Krispy Kreme app.)

Under those two special offers, Krispy Kreme loyalty program members may receive a free iced coffee every Friday (July 12, 19 and 26) with any purchase in July, according to People magazine. And there’s also and a free specialty doughnut available to members every Tuesday in July. (The free doughnut options this week included the brand’s Kit Kat Collection: a Kit Kat Crunch Doughnut, a Kit Kat Cookie Dream Doughnut or a Kit Kat Salted Caramel Brownie Doughnut, according to NBC’s Today program.)

Specials, Giveaways and Discounts

Krispy Kreme is known for marking many holidays – including some obscure ones – with specials. Giveaways and discounts also have occurred on April Fools’ Day, Leap Day and World Kindness Day, Today mentioned in its report. And it (almost) goes without saying that the franchise did a promotion for National Doughnut Day on June 7 of this year.

The deals are all part of the brand’s history, which is as colorful as its candy sprinkles. Vernon Rudolph started selling his Krispy Kreme doughnuts to grocery stores in 1937, while the Great Depression, the nation’s worst economic crisis, was still going on. Despite the era’s financial uncertainty, the company says the pastries became so popular that Rudolph constructed an opening through an outside wall of his business so he could sell the brand’s Original Glazed doughnuts directly to people who happened to be strolling by on the sidewalk.
