By offering a luxury fitness experience at an affordable price, Hydrogen Fitness is carving out its own niche in the booming wellness industry. Founders Jonathan Gutwein, now the president, and Andrew Pinon, now the CEO, teamed up to open the first Hydrogen Fitness facility in 2020, offering premium services and competitive pricing. Both have strong backgrounds in the physical fitness business.

“By delivering a higher-caliber product at a significantly lower cost than traditional luxury brands, the franchise appeals to both value-conscious consumers and those seeking high-end services,” says Gutwein. Hydrogen Fitness’s price of $149.99 a month is about half of what other upmarket fitness clubs charge, he says. Gutwein notes that Hydrogen Fitness is the only large-scale luxury fitness facility franchise in the U.S. that is open 24 hours a day, combining the spaciousness of the average gym with the upscale features of higher-priced facilities.

Hydrogen Fitness facilities offer more than 80 classes a week catering to people at all ability levels, and personal trainers provide customized workout plans. Amenities including towel service, a sauna and a steam room elevate the user experience. In addition, the Hydrogen Fitness app offers convenience by allowing members to use their phones to track their workouts, book classes, and communicate with a trainer.

Hydrogen Fitness also integrates holistic wellness with spa services such as deep-tissue massage and facials, along with chiropractic services and acupuncture. Advanced recovery options, including cold plunge therapy, red light therapy and infrared sauna, support post-workout recovery and overall wellness.

The health and fitness industry shows no sign of slowing down, with estimates by McKinsey & Company that the wellness market in the United States reached $480 billion in 2024, growing at a rate of 5 to 10% a year. McKinsey’s research also indicates that in-person fitness classes and personal training are the top two areas in which consumers expect to increase their fitness spending, with consumers expecting to maintain their spending on fitness club memberships and apps at the same level.

“Hydrogen Fitness aligns well with the growing health and wellness market by offering a premium yet affordable wellness experience, integrating both fitness and spa services and providing the flexibility that consumers increasingly demand,” Pinon says. “This positions the brand to meet the evolving preferences for holistic wellness, personalization and convenience.”

The Business Model

Pinon says that the company’s business model is designed around a recurring revenue structure, “where costs are fixed from day one. This means you only need a specific number of members to break even. Everything beyond that threshold is incredibly profitable — once you hit that break-even threshold, 90% of the revenue generated afterwards is pure profit,” he says.

Other sources supplement the recurring revenue from memberships, including personal training, golf and soccer simulators, and the HydroBar, which sells smoothies and other healthy options. “Our strategy for driving growth is built on a robust sales process and a compelling value proposition. We offer premium services at an extremely competitive price point,” Pinon says. “This, combined with targeted marketing and exceptional customer service, helps us attract and retain a loyal membership base.”

Hydrogen Fitness began franchising in 2024 and is looking for franchise partners who are passionate about the business. The company assists new franchisees with selecting a site, overseeing construction of the facility and marketing. A corporate team will even presell memberships before the facility opens, and franchisees can take advantage of preferred pricing through the company’s partnerships with vendors.

“Building a strong culture and environment at Hydrogen Fitness is key to retaining members,” Gutwein says. “This isn’t a stiff corporate club — this is a friendly, locally owned business. The facility combines a welcoming atmosphere with luxury amenities. Personal connections are fostered through friendly staff, group classes and social events, all creating a sense of community. Personalized fitness plans and expert support help members achieve their goals. Feedback and recognition of achievements further ensure members feel valued. This all makes Hydrogen Fitness a premium yet approachable wellness destination.”
