Shane Sparks purchased his Louisville, Ky.-based Hallmark Homecare franchise in March 2024, and the senior caregiver staffing service is doing so well that he will soon increase his investment. “It has surpassed my highest expectations. I have worked extremely hard and have had tremendous success,” Sparks says. “I’m forever grateful to Hallmark and its corporate team. I plan to invest in another business development person and hire a person to manage scheduling and recruiting as we grow into surrounding cities and counties.”

From the get-go, Hallmark Homecare’s unique business model impressed him. Here’s how it works: Franchisees recruit a pool of caregivers to assist senior citizens in their homes. Clients pay Hallmark Homecare to supply them with multiple caregiver candidates; the caregivers have undergone criminal background checks and their qualifications are verified. Clients choose whom to hire and then they’re the employers, coordinating needs and schedules with the caregivers directly.

Because there’s no middleman increasing costs of every shift, caregivers earn more and clients pay less. That makes Hallmark Homecare an attractive business proposition to all involved: franchisees, caregivers and clients.

The demand for in-home senior care is high and franchisees benefit from a thriving industry. Fortune Business Insights valued the global elderly care market at more than $49 billion in 2024, with a forecast of $53 billion-plus in 2025 and $98 billion by 2032 for a growth rate of 9% annually. North America had the largest share of that market – 33.5% – in 2024, according to Fortune Business Insights.

Why Hallmark Homecare?

The senior caregiving industry reflects quite a career change for Sparks, who launched his Hallmark Homecare franchise on May 6, 2024. “I taught elementary school from 1998 to 2006. Then I worked with a childhood friend to open BumperDoc franchises from 2006 to 2008. I had low- and mid-level accounting jobs from 2008 to 2018 and earned my certified public accountant license. Then I worked remotely as chief financial officer for a very small health care company from 2018 to 2024.”

At that point, Sparks was ready to scratch his entrepreneurial itch. “I was looking for the right business to start, or franchise to invest in, for many months. I had decided to open a home-care agency when I found Hallmark, and it instantly made sense to me and I wanted in. The brand is very strong and growing, with a phenomenal leadership team that is well-invested. The business model is a win-win for clients and caregivers, and it solves critical problems in a growing marketplace that will not be replaced by AI or automation.”

His franchise keeps him on his toes with long hours. “Most days I work from home, starting around 9 a.m. I work on the schedule, solve problems, recruit caregivers and build relationships with referral partners until 6 p.m. Then I work every evening from 9 or 10 p.m. until midnight or 1 a.m. to catch up on paperwork, fill open shifts and work on continuous improvement. Weekends vary from three hours up to 16-plus hours if I’m inspired or things are busy.”

As an empty nester married to a busy kindergarten teacher, Sparks can dedicate himself to the demanding schedule. “I have a lot of time and energy to pour into my business. My wife and I make time to be together, and I prioritize my exercise and time outside, so I feel my life has a great balance even though I work a lot of hours. I am at a point in my life where I’m glad to have this important work to do. And I’m so grateful to be the decision-maker after working for other people for decades.”

Running the Caregiver Staffing Franchise

He’s not flying solo with his business, though. Early on, Sparks hired a full-time business development person who is involved in the community every day. And of course, he wrangles a registry of 100 busy caregivers – 70 of them worked in November, for example.

Building his registry has been a challenge, he admits, because he wants only the best, most-reliable caregivers to ensure his business maintains a positive reputation. “It can also be a big challenge to manage a changing and growing schedule, especially with new and untested caregivers,” Sparks says. “One big surprise is the amount of time and energy consumed by what I characterize as ‘caregiver drama,’ ” which he describes as the complex relationships that caregivers develop with their peers and with their clients.

Juggling all of these demands might be too much for some people, but not for Sparks. “Being a franchise owner has been an overwhelmingly positive and rewarding experience. I am very grateful to [founder and President] Steve Everhart and the Hallmark Team for investing in me and my future.”
