Project LeanNation, a unique meal preparation franchise, recognizes that helping people become healthier requires more than nutritious food. That’s why the company goes beyond offering meals by integrating technology and providing a supportive environment with personalized coaching to motivate customers to keep working toward success with their fitness goals.
The company also empowers its franchise partners to succeed, say members of the Project LeanNation management team. Director of Growth Brandon Hudson and Director of Franchise Support Chris Kennedy (above with corporate team) say that Project LeanNation prioritizes franchisee training and support, with the technological tools and ongoing assistance they need to thrive.
“We treat technology like a core product of the brand, not a side tool,” Hudson says, explaining how the company’s proprietary PLN Storefront platform gives franchisees a strong operational advantage. “Storefront connects the most important parts of the business into one clear view so franchise partners and our support team can make faster decisions and stay focused on what drives store-level performance,” he says.
The platform produces reports that highlight key performance indicators, showing which ones are leading and which are lagging. Corporate teams can use the same data to provide targeted coaching that is specific to a particular store. “We can pinpoint root causes and prioritize the highest-impact actions,” Hudson says. “Storefront also lets us identify systemwide trends, which improves the playbooks, training, and operating standards we deliver across the network.”
Project LeanNation Franchisee Training
Training starts immediately after a franchise agreement is signed, Kennedy says, and new franchisees train for several days at the Project LeanNation headquarters in Rochester, N.Y., learning about operational execution along with leadership expectations and the philosophy that guides the company. The corporate training team then provides on-site, pre-opening support at the new franchise location, he says, and each franchisee consults regularly with a dedicated New Store Opening Specialist.
The company has focused on simplifying day-to-day operations for franchise partners. Because meals are prepared at a central location, franchisees don’t need to worry about food prep or accommodating a kitchen. “We are intentional about reducing complexity so owners can focus on leading,” Kennedy says. “The business is divided into clear, repeatable systems tied to our core pillars, with profitability as the anchor. Franchisees operate within defined daily, weekly, and monthly rhythms supported by simple planning tools, visual execution boards, and standardized operating procedures.”
If franchisees run into challenges, the company focuses on diagnosing the root cause of the issue rather than applying a surface-level fix, Kennedy says. “We work with franchisees to identify whether the issue is related to people, process, or performance, and then build a clear action plan with defined accountability,” he says.
Communication and Support
Clear communication is a key part of franchise partner training and support, with weekly Franchise Partner Alignment calls, Monthly systemwide Momentum calls w/ department leads and Quarterly Regional Roundtable calls. “In addition, we also host a bi-weekly PLN On-Demand call focused on live problem solving on any topic that a franchise partner brings to the table,” Kennedy says. “We also visit each store in-market at least twice per year for hands-on support, coaching, and compliance reviews.
The company strives to be responsive to franchisee needs, Kennedy says. “We listen closely to operational realities and continuously improve tools, training, and support where it strengthens execution,” he says. “At the same time, we hold firm on non-negotiable brand standards that protect the customer experience and the broader franchise community. Overall, our approach is built around clarity, accountability, and partnership, giving franchise owners the structure and support they need to build strong, sustainable businesses.”
To ensure that franchises continue to thrive, Project LeanNation relies on data-driven marketing campaigns, Hudson says, which clearly show which offers and channels are most efficient. “For franchise owners, that means smarter local spending on marketing with a clear return on investment,” he says.
“We design systemwide technology to make local marketing easier to execute and harder to get wrong, while still giving franchisees room to be authentic in their communities,” Hudson says. Project LeanNation provides materials for marketing campaigns, for example ready-to-use social media posts and videos or in-store kits that support menu launches. “Franchisees then localize execution through community relationships, partnerships, events, and market-specific storytelling,” he says. “Franchise partners get ready-to-use assets, built-in distribution, and direct visibility into performance so they can move quickly and stay consistent.”
Project LeanNation also utilizes performance data to make support more relevant, Hudson says, so that the company can offer store-specific insights to franchisees rather than generic advice.
“In short, technology helps us stay proactive,” Hudson says. “It helps us catch small issues early, support execution consistently, and keep franchise partners and their teams connected to the larger system as we expand.”
Looking Ahead
New investments in technology for 2026 include an upgrade to the PLN member app that integrates progress tracking and meal tracking so that Project LeanNation teams can offer more precise coaching. The company is also introducing AI-supported coaching that identifies patterns and recommends next steps, Hudson says, adding that human relationships between staff and members will still be the primary focus.
“Also, we are rolling out Leana, our AI business co-pilot for franchise partners and teams,” Hudson says. “We already use AI to improve training and knowledge access, and we are expanding that into more proactive support across operations, customer engagement, and franchise support. The goal is to reduce operational friction by helping teams get answers faster, execute with more consistency, and spend more time on what drives results inside the store. As these capabilities expand, they will help owners and teams make better decisions, move faster, and drive stronger ROI.”
Project LeanNation was launched in 2012 by founder Tim Dougherty and today has more than 80 locations. As the brand has expanded across the country, it has successfully partnered with Limitless Franchise Growth, a company that specializes in facilitating the growth of franchisors.
