Lance Freeman is used to putting out fires — literally. His very first job was fighting wildfires for the U.S. Forest Service. Ultimately, government work wasn’t for him, but he learned a lot from the adventure. He experienced the value of teamwork, developed grit and mastered the art of staying calm under pressure. As it turns out, those skills would prove cornerstones in his next chapter: franchising.

Freeman has spent more than 30 years in the fitness and wellness sector, serving in franchise development roles and as a master franchisee. Over time, he helped grow several major brands and supported their expansion into new markets. He later served as President of Franchise Development for the boutique fitness platform Xponential Fitness, where he contributed to its rapid nationwide growth and emergence as a dominant player in the category.

After decades of helping other brands grow, Freeman was ready to build one of his own. In 2024, he launched Limitless Franchise Growth, a boutique franchise development company of top tier sales talent that helps brands scale their franchise systems for both emerging and established concepts. “I’ve always been driven to be a catalyst for positive change in people’s lives, and franchising has been an incredible vehicle to do that at scale,” says Freeman.

Sustainable Franchise Growth

Freeman’s mission is to help franchises achieve sustainable growth — and that begins with building a strong foundation. “It starts with infrastructure,” he says. “Brands that scale well have the systems, support teams, and operational discipline in place before they accelerate growth.” A robust awarding process, the right partners and number of units are also critical.

What many franchisors fail to understand, he says, is that expanding quickly should never trump scaling intelligently. “Many brands want to grow, but they don’t know how to scale effectively,” he says. “Growth can become a distraction from what founders should be most focused on — supporting and strengthening their existing franchisees. Without the right experience and structure, expansion can pull attention away from the core business.”

Freeman has worked with more than 30 emerging brands, and each one has helped shape his views on expansion. Leadership is always a necessity. “I’ve learned that great leadership is non-negotiable,” he states. “The most successful leaders have a clear vision, relentless commitment, and the ability to attract and develop great talent.” Other essentials? Operations, training, and financial performance. “All need to be in place before pushing national expansion,” he explains. “Responsible growth isn’t slower growth; it’s smarter growth.”

When it comes to building legacy brands, Freeman loves categories that positively impact communities like health and wellness, kids’ enrichment, pet care, beauty and lifestyle service brands. “They’ve proven to be resilient, recession-resistant and less vulnerable to disruption from AI and new technology.”

Long-term success stems from enlisting the right partners, protecting brand culture and building strong operational standards. Systems play a critical role. “They protect brand standards and build brand equity,” he says. “Bigger deals don’t automatically mean bigger outcomes. A clear playbook combined with consistent execution is what allows a brand to scale without losing what made it special in the first place.”

Of course, the ability to put out the occasional fire never hurts either.
