Cryotherapy Helped Hydralive Stand Out in a Crowded Wellness Franchise Market
After determining that the emerging Hydralive Therapy franchise holds an important edge in the wellness market, business partners Josh O’Neal and Melissa Wright (below) invested. They opened Hydralive Therapy of Columbus, Ga., in June 2022. After a few bumps, they’ve entered a long period of smooth sailing.
Cryotherapy tipped the scales in favor of Hydralive over other brands, O’Neal says. “The allure of Hydralive Therapy was the inclusion of cryotherapy in their service offerings. This is a standout differentiator in a crowded field of providers that solely focus on IV therapy.” He also praises Hydralive Therapy’s “suite of tailored wellness services that fill a unique niche in the market. Our early involvement with the brand has helped us to shape its direction.”
Hydralive’s three-minute cryotherapy treatments expose the body to extremely low temperatures, with clients turning to them mainly to reduce pain and soreness. IV clients typically want to boost hydration, vitamins and/or minerals. The brand’s services are right in line with market demand. In North America, the IV hydration segment accounted for approximately $1.6 billion in 2024, and it’s forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.7% between 2025 and 2030, according to Grand View Research
“Getting in early with Hydralive Therapy was both exciting and challenging, given it was not only a young brand but also our first venture into business ownership. We faced our share of trials and errors, which were crucial learning experiences,” O’Neal says. “But remarkably, within A just six months, we achieved a positive cashflow and now the business operates smoothly with minimal oversight.” His typical duties are answering the occasional question from the front desk and handling biweekly payroll. Wright takes charge of clinical operations.
Fulfillment Through Entrepreneurship
She and O’Neal appreciate two overriding benefits of Hydralive ownership. First, it diversifies their income sources. And second, he says, is their fulfillment from “mustering the courage to fulfill a longstanding aspiration — becoming business owners.”
His entrepreneurial motivation followed a six-week pandemic-era furlough from his full-time job. “That was an eye-opener for me. It showed me the unpredictability of traditional employment and emphasized the importance of income diversification. That led me to explore franchising as a more secure and entrepreneurial path forward.”
Wright, a registered nurse, “noticed a growing trend toward improving accessibility to medical services, which is fantastic, but this shift often comes at the cost of personalized care. Franchising with Hydralive offered a way to blend the personal touch with convenience for clients. It also provided a strategic move toward my retirement, allowing me to build wealth while remaining engaged in the nursing profession, which I’m deeply passionate about.”
O’Neal says their franchise’s biggest challenge hit early: a problematic nitrogen-filled cryotherapy chamber. “Hydralive corporate advised us to transition to an electric unit, a change that’s proven beneficial on multiple fronts. It’s more cost-effective and energy-efficient, and it has also greatly reduced operational stress.”
Encouraged by strong customer support, O’Neal and Wright are considering opening a second Hydralive franchise within the next year or two. The brand has franchise opportunities available from coast to coast. Owners can be hands-on as operators or opt for a semi-absentee model by hiring a general manager.
