Demand for premium skin care is soaring among people of all ages in the United States. But there’s no well-known industry leader, say the founders of Skin Experts by Brentwood Spa, and they aim to change that. Founded in 2019 with a line of primarily plant-based skin care products, the brand now has evolved into an emerging spa franchise not only offering its signature QÚL Beauty skin care products, but also providing high-tech facials at affordable prices through a membership model.

“We are in an extremely exciting industry right now, the industry of skin care, and there’s not one trusted, name-brand skin care spa that’s in everybody’s neighborhood,” says co-founder and Executive Chairman Tim Mulcahy. “And that’s our mission: to be the Starbucks of skin care in every neighborhood, bringing quality, affordable skin care to the masses, regardless of age, whether it’s a preteen or teen dealing with acne, or it’s someone in their 20s or 30s who just wants to enhance the way they look, or someone who is starting to lose elasticity and collagen, or who has troubled skin or pigmentation issues. We’re there for all, for every solution, and at a price and in a high-tech way that’s not being done by anyone else.”

Skin Experts by Brentwood Spa incorporates technologies including microcurrent, LED and oxygen therapies in its facials. Unlike other brands that offer these treatments as added services at extra cost, Skin Experts provides them as part of its regular service – and at a cost much lower than the other brands, founders say. “The whole idea is to make our services affordable,” Mulcahy says.

Microcurrent therapy uses low-voltage electrical impulses to stimulate facial muscles and improve blood flow to the skin that can reduce visible signs of aging. LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses skin-safe, low-level light in different wavelengths to treat various skin conditions; blue LED therapy, for example, is thought to kill acne-causing bacteria, while red LED therapy may reduce inflammation and stimulate the production of collagen. Oxygen facials can improve blood circulation and enable pores to more easily absorb beneficial serum ingredients, helping to reduce fine wrinkles and leave skin more radiant and hydrated.

Key Differentiators

  • Skin Experts’ proprietary QÚL Beauty skin care line (above), which features products primarily formulated with plant-based ingredients including probiotics, microalgae and hemp oil, among others.
  • Oversight and training by Chief Beauty Officer Shelley Hancock, an esthetician trainer, author and former radio show host with almost four decades of experience who specializes in helping estheticians incorporate cutting-edge technology into their treatments.
  • An emphasis on maintaining a regular skin care regimen, offering affordable and flexible memberships for clients, as well as skin care products and tools for home use that provide LED, ozone, microcurrent and other therapies. “Consumers increasingly want consistent support for their skin care. We want to be there for them by providing regular affordable spa treatments as well as a proper home-care regimen,” Mulcahy says.

Why a Skin Care Franchise?

The U.S. skin care products market size was estimated at $22.9 billion in 2023, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.2% from 2024 to 2030, according to Grand View Research, which reported that 87% of consumers are spending more on beauty and skin care products since the pandemic than in pre-Covid times, with growing interest among men. The U.S. market for skin care tools, such as those offered for home use by Skin Experts, is also growing from $5.6 billion in 2023 to a projected $16.7 billion by 2033.

Skin Experts by Brentwood Spa is positioned to take advantage of this growth. Now with corporate locations in Brentwood, Calif., and Lincoln and Papillion, Neb., the franchise has territories available in all 50 states. The corporate team provides comprehensive training in treatments, marketing and sales, as well as support with location selection, design and construction, and software and financial setup.

An ideal franchise owner is someone who is passionate about being involved in the daily operation of the spa, has an entrepreneurial spirit and experience in business management and customer service. A background in the beauty industry is not required.

“The primary attraction for franchise candidates is the dream of owning their own beautiful spa,” Mulcahy says, “and being able to go there every day and helping clients feel beautiful. Making people happy all day long is a good career move.”
