Partners Sam Langer and James Bonavita Pave the Way for Convenient, Personalized Fitness in Westchester and Southern Fairfield County

Growing up together, longtime friends Sam Langer and James Bonavita loved working out and coming up with creative ways to push themselves to achieve their fitness goals. Both went on to participate in sports in college, Langer playing club golf at Indiana University and Bonavita playing football for Sacred Heart University.

Today, they continue to challenge each other in positive ways as GYMGUYZ partners, providing customized in-home, onsite and virtual personal fitness training in Westchester County, N.Y., since 2014 and southern Fairfield County, Conn., since 2017.

The innovative GYMGUYZ model — taking the workout to the client — appealed to the partners, who believe convenience yields greater consistency and positive results. GYMGUYZ trainers are certified professionals who bring their expertise and equipment to the homes, workplaces or other locations of choice for their clients. Having to get to the gym is no longer an excuse and a potential barrier to working out.

There are tons of fads in fitness, but we stick to the basics.

Personalized Fitness

Langer and Bonavita also were attracted to GYMGUYZ’s personalized approach to fitness, creating fun and challenging programs to help each client achieve his or her unique goals – which was something they always enjoyed doing for each other.

“There are tons of fads in fitness, but we stick to the basics. Our goal is to ensure our clients get solid workouts in a safe manner,” Langer says. “I think you will start to see more and more in-home equipment that is space-suitable for everyone. Whether you have a $25,000 gym in your home or one rack of dumbbells, GYMGUYZ will still provide our clients with an exceptional experience as we have some of the most well-trained and knowledgeable staff around.”

The duo also saw a big future in the growing, billion-dollar personal training industry. According to Future Market Insights, the global personal fitness trainer market was estimated to be valued at $41.8 billion in 2023 and is projected to surpass $65.5 billion by 2033.

Now with 18 employees in Westchester and four in Fairfield, the partners continuously strive to hire and keep the best staff. “Finding the right recipe to keeping good trainers is crucial and can be challenging,” Langer says. “We want to provide wages and benefits that enable our staff to have a suitable lifestyle doing this full time. The trainers are the ones who are face-to-face with our clientele. So, we need to ensure they are well trained, happy and enthusiastic about what they are doing.”

Langer and Bonavita plan to continue buying more territories and expanding the reach of GYMGUYZ while mentoring other franchisees. They say GYMGUYZ offers a great franchise opportunity. “GYMGUYZ is a low-cost franchise that is suitable for anyone who needs to bootstrap their business. Costs only increase as revenue increases, as trainer salaries are our biggest expense,” Langer says. “The best part of this opportunity is that there is no limit on your reach in terms of servicing clientele. If you own a brick-and-mortar gym, you may only be able to grab clients within a five- to 10-mile range until they find something closer to them. With GYMGUYZ, a client could be a 20- to 25-minute drive away and we can still service them because of the convenience of traveling to them!”
