December 12, 2006 - The Smart franchise was designed to be franchised right from the start. The Directors and management team had already been involved in very successful, award-winning franchises.

The key to building a successful franchise is seeing the potential in a fragmented industry and taking control, says Adrienne Pierce co-founder of the PORSE franchise and the Smart franchise, which launched in New Zealand this year.

When Adrienne sold her shares in PORSE in 2003 and considered building another profitable franchise business, she saw the potential in the business services outsourcing market and decided to enter it in a very smart way.

In today’s business environment businesses want to do more with less. In order to do that, a business must focus its limited resources on the business activities that are essential to its survival and find better ways to perform activities that are not essential - basic things they need to do simply to be in business. In general, key activities need to be done in-house and basic activities, such as administration, can be outsourced.

There was a gap in the market. Small to medium business owners can access coaches and mentors for business advice; Accountants for GST returns, end of year accounts and tax returns – but when they are told what they need to do, who is actually going to do it for them on a day-to-day basis?

“We will,” says Adrienne, “Smart is different. We’re not accountants; however we do much more that bookkeeping. The Smart franchise provides a unique combination of phone, administration, payroll and financial services that allow business owners to get on with doing what they do best while someone else takes care of the practical office stuff – basically, we do the work that keeps the businesses wheels turning, but doesn’t produce income.”

Adrienne’s aim in starting Smart is to take care of business owners by providing professional, practical support and helping them improve their business performance. Adrienne and her sister, Sue Sarich, saw the opportunity to fill the gap whilst strategically designing a Smart franchise business system that would help franchisees build a serious business for themselves.
