New Franchise Opportunity Taps into Booming Energy Efficiency Market
- Thermo-S Insulation, founded in 2015, is an emerging energy efficiency franchise providing insulation installation and other services.
- Starting as a “one-man show” when he founded the business, CEO Nick Smith has grown Thermo-S Insulation by focusing on innovation, superior customer service and building relationships within the industry.
- Residential construction and retrofits of existing homes are driving the flourishing energy efficiency market.
Nick Smith, founder and CEO of Thermo-S Insulation, started small – “as a one-man show with a truck full of broken equipment that I repaired myself,” he says. Eleven years later, Smith leads an emerging energy efficiency franchise that has expanded its services beyond home insulation into comprehensive home performance.
“We built proven processes for sales, marketing, diagnostics, installation and equipment maintenance so our crews deliver consistent, measurable improvements in comfort, efficiency and indoor air quality,” Smith says. In addition to traditional home insulation and spray-foam insulation services, Thermo-S Insulation offers home energy audits using diagnostic tools including those to detect air that’s either infiltrating or escaping the house; duct testing to pinpoint and repair leaks; and pressure testing to ensure consistency throughout the house.
Thermo-S Insulation has received ENERGY STAR Awards and certifications including Building Performance Institute certifications preferred by public utility companies. “Probably 25% of our leads come right from our local utility company. So, we have a highly reputable lead source, and we’ve probably closed about 90% of those estimates,” he says.
Entrepreneurial Background
Smith’s roots in entrepreneurship run deep – helping his school teacher-dad paint houses during the summer around their hometown of Mesa, Ariz., and launching his own business spraying radiant barrier coatings in homeowners’ attics using one of his father’s paint machines.
As a college student, Smith worked for an insulation company and grew increasingly interested in building science. Upon his graduation, he made a big decision: Rather than pursuing a career in his major, nuclear medicine, he took the entrepreneurial path, launching Thermo-S Insulation in 2015.
His interest in science and innovation has continued to propel the business’s growth and competitive differentiation as an energy efficiency franchise. Smith says Thermo-S has evolved in two ways: First, by being able to identify problems in homes, such as leaking ductwork resulting in poor indoor air quality and higher energy costs, and provide a service to fix the problems; and, secondly, by finding tools to help illustrate the issues to homeowners and quantify the savings that would result from repairs and upgrades.
Demand for Energy Efficiency
Franchising was the next logical step for Thermo-S Insulation, especially as demand continues to surge for home energy efficiency, Smith says. “We offer a great service to residential customers. I wanted to be able to do that for as many people as we can. Franchising seemed like the best model to do that.”
New residential construction and retrofits of existing homes are driving growth of the $13.6 billion insulation contractors industry in the U.S., which has experienced a 2.1% compound annual growth rate between 2020 and 2025, according to IBISWorld. The energy efficiency market is expected to continue to flourish as consumer interest in conservation increases along with energy costs, according to the report.
The Thermo-S Insulation team understands and respects that homeowners are more knowledgeable than ever before. “Our sales process is based on a more educational, informative approach. We’re not pushy. We’re not trying to sell them on this huge, bulky estimate. We’ve got a lot of options for them and we cater our estimate to fit what they want and need,” Smith says.
Respecting the Customer
That approach is key to the Thermo-S Insulation culture, says Sierra Sutton, Thermo-S Insulation director of franchise development. “It’s really about solving the homeowner’s needs, educating them and letting them make the choice,” she says.
In evaluating prospective franchisees, Sutton and Smith look for alignment with those values. “We definitely want franchise partners who are a good culture fit, who place value in hard work and really taking care of our customers,” she says. “We have a pretty high referral rate, so we focus on building those relationships with clients and building that trust with them.”
Smith says experience in sales, management or business is ideal, and he’s especially interested in problem solvers. “When you run a business, it doesn’t matter what business it is, you’re going to have to jump through some hoops or solve some problems on a daily basis. So, partnering with problem solvers is huge for me. I’m also looking for people who are passionate about home performance and the business because I’m super passionate about what I do.”
Training and Support
Franchise owners receive hands-on training at the Thermo-S Insulation headquarters in Mesa, Ariz., in insulation removal and installation of traditional types of insulation such as fiberglass batting and blown-in cellulose, as well as radiant barriers, attic air sealing and duct sealing. The Thermo-S team provides videos for training franchisees’ employees, as well. Franchisees have the option of also providing spray foam insulation from the launch of their business, or adding that service later. A two-day training in spray foam insulation is held in Georgia.
Franchisees also gain a support network that includes all aspects of the business such as sales, marketing, accounting and insurance. For their first 90 days in operation, franchisees have weekly video meetings with Thermo-S leaders to go over “whatever is on their minds,” Smith says. In addition, franchise owners benefit from relationships with preferred vendors and negotiated rebates on purchases of equipment and materials.
“By joining our energy efficiency franchise, you don’t start from scratch,” Smith says. “You gain the hard-earned knowledge I learned the long way — so you can avoid common pitfalls, scale faster and lead in your market,” he says.
