Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt is credited for laying the groundwork for Teacher Appreciation Week. In 1953, she urged Congress to create a day to recognize educators.
After the joint lobbying efforts of the National Education Association and some state boards, March 7, 1980, was recognized as a national day for teachers. The National Parent Teacher Association designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week four years later.
