Tricia Petteys (above) is a perfect example of what’s possible when you lead with heart, purpose and a clear vision. As CEO and co-founder of Payroll Vault, she’s helping entrepreneurs grow strong businesses while creating a franchise community rooted in support, connection and shared success.

Payroll Vault is a modern payroll and workforce management franchise that gives small business owners the best of both worlds: personal, boutique-style service with the power of national tools and technology. It’s all about personal service and strong relationships, not one-size-fits-all solutions. Petteys found her calling in payroll after working in human resources. “I loved the work,” she says. “It felt like a natural fit from the start, and I’ve been all in ever since.”

In 2008, a mutual friend introduced her to Sean Manning, who had just launched Payroll Vault from his accounting firm. That connection set things in motion. She joined the company early on, worked her way into the COO role and, earlier this year, stepped up as CEO. “When Sean asked me to become COO, it really lit a fire. That’s when I started investing more in leadership, learning from others and connecting with people who could help me grow.”

Like many women in leadership, Petteys has had to navigate outdated assumptions. “I’ve had moments where I wasn’t seen as the decision-maker. I’d be asked to take notes or handle logistics instead of lead,” she says. Instead of getting discouraged, she stayed focused and leaned into those moments with confidence. “There’s always been some pressure to prove I belong. But I show up prepared, get results and make space for others to grow too.”

Now, as CEO of a growing franchise brand, Petteys is leading by example — and showing other women that there’s plenty of room at the top.

Creating a Culture of Growth

Petteys has played a big role in shaping a culture at Payroll Vault that puts people first. The focus is on support, transparency and helping others grow. Employees have clear paths for advancement that match their personal goals, and open conversations about success are encouraged from day one.

That same mindset extends across the franchise network. Petteys is part of a close-knit group of female leaders who meet regularly to share ideas and cheer each other on. It’s a community built on connection and support — something she believes makes the brand stronger. She credits many women— from her single mom to a restaurant manager where she worked in grad school — for shaping her leadership style. “I’ve had women around me who coached and nudged me, who helped me stand in my own power and own my choices — good and bad.”

An Empowering Franchise Opportunity

Payroll Vault is a strong fit for entrepreneurs who want a meaningful business with steady, recurring revenue. “Our goal is to give small businesses a boutique payroll experience,” says Petteys. “We’re not just processing paychecks — we’re building relationships and helping our clients grow.”

For Petteys, the most rewarding part of leading Payroll Vault has been seeing franchise owners and team members gain confidence and hit their goals. She’s excited about what’s ahead, especially for women in franchising. “More women are stepping into franchise ownership and leadership with confidence and clarity,” she says. “At Payroll Vault, we’re proud to support that shift by building an inclusive culture and encouraging collaboration. When women thrive, everyone wins.”
