The history of National Cookie Day goes back to 1987 when Matt Nader, who established the Blue Chip Cookie Company with his family, created Cookie Day, celebrating it on Dec. 4. And the cookie, which is derived from the Dutch word koekie, meaning “little cake,” has an interesting history all its own. The origin of the shareable dessert traces back to the 7th century in Persia, shortly after sugar was introduced to the region. Cookies then spread to Europe and became common at all levels of society by the 14th century. North America was introduced to cookies in the 17th century.
Today, the U.S. cookies market is worth $12.48 billion and is projected to reach $14.73 billion by 2029.
