Fast-Food Franchises Celebrate the Big Shopping Day and Ring in the Holidays with Specials and Gift Card Deals
Updated November 28, 2025
The Friday after Thanksgiving is one of the most popular shopping days of the year. Black Friday ushers in the holiday season with deep retail discounts — and, for many, has come to be as much a part of the Thanksgiving tradition as the turkey itself.
But the origin of “Black Friday,” is murky, and not entirely pleasant. The first recorded usage of the term stems from a gold market crash on Sept. 24, 1869, which was caused by a pair of shady Wall Street financiers who drove up the price of gold by buying as much as possible then selling it, causing the market to plummet.
Another story dates to the 1950s in Philadelphia, where police used the term, “Black Friday,” to describe the chaos on the day after Thanksgiving when shoppers and tourists flooded the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held on the following Saturday. Philadelphia merchants and boosters tried unsuccessfully to change the negative connotation by calling the day “Big Friday.”
According to another origin story, Black Friday’s connection to retailers was more positive. This version holds that retailers typically operated at a loss, or “in the red,” for most of the calendar year up until the day after Thanksgiving, when strong sales boosted profits and put them “in the black.”
Regardless of how it began, Black Friday has morphed beyond a one-day shopping spree into a multi-day retail phenomenon that includes Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday, as well.
Fast-food franchises get in on the Black Friday action with deals and discounts of their own. Read on for a compilation of brands participating in post-Thanksgiving festivities.
