Multi-Unit Franchisee Joe Hilliard Says the Decision to Invest in Amada Opened New Avenues for Personal and Professional Growth
Multi-unit franchisee Joe Hilliard and his family couldn’t be happier about their decision to leap into franchise ownership with Amada Senior Care in 2019. Hilliard says they would do it again in a heartbeat. “We don’t have any regrets. We have grown so much spiritually, professionally, personally, financially and every other way in the last five years, and all of that has been facilitated by the investment we made in Amada, the support system and the grace of God.”
After he and his family sold their truck body manufacturing company, they looked at options for what to do next and were intrigued by the opportunities in franchising. “We understood that being part of a franchise did not guarantee success, but it certainly provided you with a head start and a support system to help drive you toward success,” he says.

Expanding Horizons
An initial visit to Amada’s headquarters in California for a discovery day where Hilliard met the leadership team deepened his belief in the franchise’s potential. “Everything about the opportunity — the general market, lack of barriers to entry, and the quality of existing franchisees — bolstered our belief that this was an attractive market and industry to be in,” he says.
After handling everything from sales to customer service in the early years of launching the Tulsa, Okla. franchise, Hilliard has transitioned to a leadership role focused on expansion. “With the recent addition of five territories, we’ve been able to step back and enjoy more of what life has to offer,” he notes. Hilliard plans to expand into Amada’s complementary product lines, including staffing and health care services.
The expansion was made possible by the Amada leadership team’s support, Hilliard believes. “Without them, we wouldn’t have the insights or resources needed to succeed.”
Following the System
Following Amada’s proven system went against Hilliard’s entrepreneurial nature at times, but he is glad he did. “I have a tendency to want to do my own thing. So, it has been really difficult at times to deal with staying in my lane and following the system rules and standards. Adjusting to the fact that every decision wasn’t just mine has been tough,” he says. “However, having that system in place has kept me from taking off on tangents and venturing down a bunch of different rabbit holes that could have cost time and money.”
Financial Freedom
For Hilliard, financial freedom is comfort, the ability to travel and enjoy family time, and manage his business with minimal oversight — a lifestyle that franchising has made possible. He advises anyone considering a franchise to “be like Nike and just do it. If you have the ability to be successful in business, then you will be significantly more successful with a franchise. If you can’t be successful with a franchise, most likely you would not be successful with any business.”
