Ferriero Leverages Expertise in Banking, Real Estate and Automotive Dealership Sectors

Franchise Equity Partners, a private investment firm focused on partnering with franchise owners and franchisors, has announced the appointment of Jay Ferriero to its automotive leadership team as an operating partner. The firm’s automotive investment strategy focuses on supporting franchise operators and dealerships with the capital and resources to achieve long-term success. Ferriero’s 45-year career spans banking, commercial finance, real estate and automotive dealership sectors.

“With over half of its $1 billion capital commitment invested, FEP has partnered with best-in-class operating teams in various industries, including quick service restaurants, residential services, fitness, health and beauty, heavy equipment, beverage distributors and auto dealerships,” Ferriero said. “Working with excellent franchisee operating partners looking to grow in diverse industries presents me with opportunities to utilize my extensive career experience. FEP is fully aligned with the success of each franchise partner, ensuring mutual growth and sustained value creation.”

Ferriero said his relationship with the private investment firm’s leadership team has deepened in recent years through collaborative efforts in the automotive retail sector. “The FEP team is composed of seasoned professionals with extensive experience, as well as highly talented young business leaders that have been growing in a unique business investing in diverse franchise businesses.”

Ferriero has spent most of his career at Capital Automotive Real Estate Services, a specialty finance company focused exclusively on automotive real estate. During his 26-year tenure with the finance company, Ferriero held key leadership roles, including president and CEO and chairman emeritus. He also served as corporate banking officer for Comerica Bank.

Mike Esposito, FEP co-founder and managing partner, said Ferriero’s professional background enhances the breadth of the firm’s automotive leadership team, complementing partner and Chairman Mark LaNeve’s experience in original equipment manufacturer sales, marketing and manufacturing, and partner Don Reese’s operational and financial expertise. “FEP’s automotive team is uniquely positioned to address the full spectrum of challenges and opportunities faced by franchise operators in this sector,” Esposito said. “This combination of team members ensures we can deliver exceptional value and insights to our partners.”

Franchising and Private Equity

Ferriero said private equity will continue to play a major role in franchising as consolidation continues across various sectors and entrepreneurs face challenges in managing the span of control. This means that future success will be determined by growth in leadership, talent acquisition, economies of scale and investments in capital and technology, he said. “Franchisees can now have access to equity and experienced investors aligned with their long-term strategy. FEP is strategically positioned to offer permanent, passive capital to its portfolio of business partners, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive market.”

The auto retail industry has been undergoing consolidation for years, presenting a consultative opportunity to collaborate with auto dealers, Ferriero said. “As a major driver of the economy, the industry’s complexity spans new and used vehicle sales, maintenance, warranties, parts, collision repair, aftermarket services and financing.”

Ferriero’s interest in the automotive sector extends to his personal life, too. When he’s not on the clock, Ferriero enjoys spending time with his family and friends, and he still gets a kick out of his 90-year-old father’s stories about the family auto dealership business and auto racing. “I enjoy sharing his passion for this industry with our next generation, especially as innovation and technology in both retail and the automobile sector continue to evolve.”

The University of Notre Dame graduate also serves on the educational institution’s Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council and the Fitzgerald Institute of Real Estate Advisory Board, as well as with a nonprofit supporting the men’s rowing team.
