Franchisors See Improved System Performance when Leadership Better Reflects Customers
- Women’s History Month recognizes past achievements and progress, but the more important takeaway is what’s next, particularly for female leadership in franchising.
- Women comprise an increasing percentage of all U.S. franchise owners.
- For women juggling family and other responsibilities, franchising offers a more compelling path to business ownership than starting from scratch because of its proven framework, established training and ongoing support.
Women’s History Month offers a moment to reflect on progress. In franchising, the more interesting questions are why female leadership is growing across franchise systems and what that means for brand and unit performance.
Across franchising, and especially in spa and wellness, more women are stepping into leadership roles. That’s exciting! It’s also not happening by accident.
This shift is driven by changes in how franchising operates, how consumers make decisions, and how franchisors increasingly recognize that when leadership better reflects the customer, the system performs better.
Female Leadership in Franchising
Franchising is an appealing path to business ownership, offering brand recognition, operational support and a model for growth. Additionally, franchising is particularly compelling for women juggling kids, aging parents, school and sport schedules, etc., because it doesn’t require time reinventing the wheel to unlock success. To that end, more women have embraced franchising in recent years, and the data supports that shift.
Women now own approximately 30% of all U.S. franchises, up from about 20% a decade ago. That growth is meaningful and signals that women increasingly see franchising as a rewarding avenue to ownership and entrepreneurial success. I believe franchising helps break down the psychological barriers involving what some might feel as the seemingly overwhelming risk of starting a business. Franchisors instill confidence during the discovery process by providing candidates with data-backed success metrics and executive team presentations that demonstrate the systems built to support healthy growth.
Additionally, mentorship is critical for building confidence and creating leadership paths. For women, especially, peer support is gold. Support from those who have been in the trenches helps make franchising feel less like a leap of faith and more like a community-supported step toward success.
Mentorship has been especially impactful for me over the years. I’ve received terrific advice from female franchisees on juggling motherhood and career, as well as unspoken guidance from those ahead of me exemplifying how to lead a life of integration, making time for family, health and wellness routines, and maintaining proper boundaries.
Without these powerful examples, I would not be where I am today, carving out my own path, on my terms, to continue growing and believing in myself.
Satisfaction data also tells an important story. Research from Franchise Business Review shows that female franchisees consistently report positive experiences, strong respect for leadership and a high likelihood of recommending franchising to other women.
Together, these trends point to something larger than just female representation. Brands that actively support female leaders are better positioned to attract strong owner-operators, retain talent and build high-performing franchise systems.
What’s Driving the Growth of Female Leadership?
Several factors are contributing to the rise in female leadership across franchising, including:
- Structured ownership path. Franchising provides a proven framework, established training and ongoing support, reducing the uncertainty of starting from scratch. For many women, that structure fosters confidence and a clear vision.
- Greater access to leadership roles. While corporate leadership hasn’t always been widely accessible, franchising has opened doors to roles in operations, training, development and management. These positions directly influence system health and unit performance.
- Focus on relationships and experience. Strong franchise brands are built on trust, consistency and customer experience. Leadership approaches that emphasize collaboration, communication and operational excellence align naturally with these priorities and directly impact franchisee and guest satisfaction.
Why Leadership that Reflects the Customer Matters
Franchising ultimately succeeds or fails at the consumer level. While it creates opportunities for business owners, long-term performance depends on how well franchisors translate consumer insight into systems franchisees can replicate.
In spa and wellness, where women make up a significant portion of the customer base, leadership alignment becomes even more critical. Teams that reflect their core customers are often quicker to anticipate needs to drive service quality, trust and consistency.
That perspective shapes decisions ranging from service, design and pricing to training programs and operational standards. All directly impacting franchisee profitability.
How Women Influence Franchise System Alignment
Healthy franchise systems rely on alignment between franchisor strategy, franchisee execution and customer expectations. Leaders who understand the customer are better equipped to build systems franchisees can successfully replicate.
Consistency is especially critical in membership-driven businesses where repeat visits, retention and referrals depend on delivering a reliable experience at scale. Leadership decisions around training, mentoring and support directly influence how consistently that experience is delivered, and women are increasingly helping shape those decisions.
Systems that prioritize alignment tend to see stronger unit operations, improved economics and more sustainable growth. Women are playing an increasingly visible role in driving that success.
What this Signals for the Future of Franchising
For prospective franchisees, leadership organization is critical. It reflects how decisions are made, the level of franchisee support and how a brand adapts as consumer expectations evolve.
The growth of female leadership points to a broader shift toward brands that understand the experience they deliver. When leadership teams share a connection to their core consumer, it becomes easier to build trust, create consistency and support long-term brand health and growth.
Women’s History Month offers a moment to recognize progress, but the more important takeaway for franchising is what’s next. As female leadership continues to grow – especially in industries where women drive demand – the brands that thrive will be those that turn an understanding of their core consumer into scalable, sustainable unit-level execution.
In franchising, where trust and consistency shape brand performance, leadership alignment is a real strategic advantage that helps put franchisees on a clearer path to long-term success.
