True Install Franchise Director Shares Insights and Advantages of Niche Franchise Opportunity
The business of sign installation has come a long way from the traditional panels on posts and illuminated, three-dimensional channel letters affixed to buildings. Demand for signage is at an all-time high, with a market size projected to increase by a 4.3% combined annual growth rate to $57.6 billion by 2035. The diverse array and complexity of signage and graphics applications also has surged, along with the demand for professional installation services.
In recognition of this market demand, Alliance Franchise Brands, which serves print, sign and graphics communications services industries throughout North America, created True Install Sign & Graphics, a sign installation franchise.
True Install focuses solely on graphics and signage installation, a key differentiator in the sign industry. That specialization enables the sign installation franchise to concentrate on intensive and ongoing training and support for franchise owners, maintain expertise in a variety of installation techniques, and provide a greater degree of professionalism, among other advantages.
True Install’s Installation and Franchise Support Director Chris Fong (pictured above, conducting a training) is a veteran of the sign and graphics industry. He brings broad skills and experience to the role, including 13 years as vice president of a successful print film and window graphic company, overseeing more than 400 employees nationwide and leading teams in design, printing, installation and developing multimillion-dollar projects across North America. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Fong began his career as manager of a Signs by Tomorrow, another of the Alliance Franchise Brands.
Fong shares his insights into True Install’s value proposition and advantages of franchise ownership below.
Q: What’s the demand for True Install’s niche service, and how would a franchisee promote it?
A: The demand for professional installation services in the signage and graphics industry is at an all-time high. What makes this niche especially valuable is its versatility and growth across multiple verticals. Today’s sign companies are integrating architectural and decorative finishes into their offerings, creating spaces that are not only branded but also visually enriched. This includes services such as distraction banding, decorative films for glass and walls, textured architectural finishes and custom dimensional displays that enhance environments. We’re also seeing a significant crossover between the vinyl graphics world and the window film industry. Installers trained in vehicle and wall wraps can transition into window film applications, and vice versa, creating broader opportunities for service.
At True Install, we stand out because we are not limited to a narrow skill set. While many companies train installers in just one or two specialties, we emphasize versatility. Our graphics and sign installation franchise has built a platform around traditional sign installations as well as ‘peel-and-stick’ applications – everything from vinyl and window films to floor, wall and vehicle graphics. This cross-training approach allows our franchisees to serve a wider range of clients and help those clients grow their own offerings.
Our franchisees promote these services by positioning themselves as full-service installation partners – not just installers, but an extension of their clients’ teams. Whether working with a sign company that lacks installation capabilities, or one with in-house teams needing extra support, True Install delivers reliability, consistency and professionalism across every touchpoint.
Q: Is there any competition at this point?
A: Currently, there is no national brand offering the same breadth and quality of services that True Install provides. While many sign companies have in-house installers – and we fully respect that – True Install is not here to compete with internal teams but to complement them. Our services are valuable even for companies with their own installers, especially in the following scenarios:
- When their team members are unavailable.
- When additional labor is needed for larger or multi-site projects.
- When they need to complete multiple installations simultaneously.
- When the project requires a skill set their team doesn’t currently have.
- When facing unfamiliar applications or specialized materials.
Similarly, there are subcontract teams operating in this space that do service local markets. What we have identified is that many of them focus on a specific range of services that has created a fractured support system for the sign and print companies. There also isn’t really a school for sign installation to the level of versatility that we offer, so the quality, consistency or professionalism that exists in any specific market, traditionally, is inconsistent across the industry. As a brand under Alliance Franchise Brands, True Install benefits from decades of experience in branding, training, operations and customer service. Our franchisees receive high-impact training, ongoing business support and access to proprietary tools and systems.
Importantly, we bring uniformity and reliability across locations. Whether a client is working with True Install in Phoenix or in Michigan, they can expect the same high standards of professionalism, communication and execution. We want to bring remarkable to the installation business.
Q: What are the benefits and any challenges of owning a business that’s so niche?
A: One of the greatest benefits of owning a True Install graphics and sign installation franchise is that you are operating in a specialized space built on a foundation of relationships. What this means is that you have an opportunity to earn a client for life. We’ve carved out a unique niche by offering a comprehensive suite of installation services under one roof – backed by a commitment of professionalism and reliability. We ultimately are bringing peace of mind to our clients. With this brand, coming from the genesis of a franchise system with deep roots in the signage and graphics industry, franchisees benefit from:
- High demand and strong industry partnerships.
- Recurring business opportunities from commercial clients.
- The ability to scale and expand service offerings.
- Proven training programs and operational systems.
- Brand recognition and credibility from Alliance Franchise Brands.
The primary challenge is tied to our growth phase as we build toward a recognized industry brand. While our concept is proven, we are still in expansion mode – meaning not every market currently has a True Install presence yet. That said, early franchisees are exceeding expectations and laying the groundwork for national recognition. With each successful project and satisfied client, the brand’s visibility and reputation continue to grow.
As with any new concept, education is key. Our focus is on creating awareness about who we are, what we do and how we can make life easier for our clients. Once they experience the True Install difference, the value becomes clear.
Q: What does a day in the life of a franchise owner look like?
A: The daily life of a True Install franchise owner evolves over time. In the early stages, typically over three to 12 months, it’s a dynamic balance between sales, operations and marketing. Franchisees are actively promoting their businesses, building relationships, quoting jobs and ensuring top-quality execution on installations.
A typical day in the life of a True Install franchise owner may include:
- Morning team huddles to review the day’s projects and logistics.
- Technology-assisted planning, leveraging our proprietary customer relationship management (CRM) and management information (MIS) systems to ensure accurate job details and client communication.
- Dispatch and oversight of the installation team to various project sites.
- Client follow-ups, estimating new projects and closing new sales.
- Prospecting and networking with potential partners in the sign, film and design industries.
- Business development, including learning new techniques, investing in tools, or adding complementary services.
Our franchisees also emphasize relationship-building. A large portion of the business comes from repeat clients who value professionalism, efficiency and consistency. Maintaining those relationships while strategically acquiring new ones is a cornerstone of success.
Q: Can you provide an update on the number of franchise owners, units sold and in development, and their locations?
A: True Install has four franchise owners operating across eight territories, with additional territories currently in development. Our active franchise locations include Phoenix; Houston; and Novi and Warren, Mich.
Each of these franchises is demonstrating the power and potential of the model in their respective markets. As the True Install graphics and sign installation franchise continues to expand, our goal is to bring True Install to more cities across the U.S., empowering local owners to build successful businesses while helping clients complete their graphics and signage installations with confidence.
