LaVonna Williams, leading the franchise development for Dryer Vent Wizard, tells of revolution and evolution for women in the home services industry. “Franchising is poised to witness a significant shift toward greater inclusivity and empowerment for women entrepreneurs. As a witness to the evolution of traditionally male-dominated industries like dryer vent cleaning and home services overall, I’ve seen a remarkable trend emerge: Women are increasingly taking the lead.

“From launching successful ventures at a young age to achieving rapid growth and accolades during challenging times like the pandemic, women franchise owners are demonstrating unparalleled resilience and determination, all while balancing their family life. What’s particularly striking is their focus on being servant leaders and strategic visionaries, prioritizing business scalability and achieving significant milestones. This evolution of women in franchising challenges stereotypes and sets the stage for a more diverse, dynamic future where women entrepreneurs play a central role in shaping industry trends and driving innovation.”

Breaking Barriers

Williams believes that peer acceptance has improved over the years. Being a part of a healthy culture has allowed her to thrive during her 12 years at Dryer Vent Wizard. “Prior to joining Dryer Vent Wizard, I faced biases in hiring and promotions and access to business opportunities because of my race and gender. To overcome those then and now, I challenge stereotypes and biases by advocating for myself, maintaining confidence in my abilities and accomplishments, and speaking out against instances of discrimination or unfair treatment.”

In advising future franchisees, she tells entrepreneurs to identify their strengths, passions and values, and seek a brand that aligns with them. “Your enthusiasm and commitment will be crucial drivers of your success as a business owner. Surround yourself with positivity and people who believe in your potential, including mentors within the franchising community. Integrate your family into your business where possible,” says Williams.

She loves the Dryer Vent Wizard brand and its mission to save lives by preventing dryer fires and helping people understand the importance of regular maintenance on their dryer venting systems. One of the 19-plus Neighborly brands, Dryer Vent Wizard cleans, repairs and installs residential and light commercial dryer vents.

The brand’s franchisees enjoy Williams’ carefully cultivated support network that provides encouragement and guidance. “And most important, I invest in uplifting other women because solidarity and mentorship are vital in overcoming systemic barriers.”

Williams reminds others to be in the moment at the moment and embrace the journey along the way. “Appreciate every moment, whether it’s filled with challenges or triumphs, as each experience contributes to personal growth and fulfillment. It encourages resilience, curiosity and a positive outlook. Find joy and meaning in the journey itself, rather than solely focusing on the destination,” she says.

Franchise news: LaVonna Williams Breaks Barriers at Dryer Vent Wizard
Williams with her family

Williams, who has an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master’s in administration and human resources, has worn many hats at Dryer Vent Wizard: vice president of franchise support and services, human resources, business coaching and managing the call center. In her current, “profoundly rewarding” position, she helps franchisees match with the right business and also launch, expand and sell their businesses or pass them down to heirs.

She adds that her inspiration stems from two phenomenal female business owners — her mother and auntie. “They broke barriers in business ownership, operating a successful tailoring and fashion venture. Also, working alongside David Lavalle, founder of Dryer Vent Wizard and Mr. Handyman, has been inspiring.”

Her varied responsibilities have yielded “a comprehensive understanding of the franchising landscape, having immersed myself in various facets of operations. Each success story reinforces the impact of empowering individuals to shape their destinies, build generational wealth and achieve their aspirations. “In reflecting on my journey, I recall my grandfather’s advice that the true tragedy in life lies in not pursuing one’s passions wholeheartedly. His words continue to resonate as I strive to live my best life and empower others to do the same.”
