Seniors Helping Seniors franchisees Mike and Melissa Walters (above) boldly turned their backs on secure jobs to find more rewarding work. Today they happily own every fulfilling aspect of their Seniors Helping Seniors franchise of Flagler, St. Johns and Volusia counties in Florida.

“We are walking in our destiny with Seniors Helping Seniors and thankful for the opportunity to live a life of purpose, on purpose,” Mike says. “We wanted to do something that would make a significant impact on others.” The franchise’s mission appealed to the couple because it provides in-home assistance to seniors who want to continue living in their homes. U.S. demographics support their choice: More than one in six Americans is 65 or older, per the Census Bureau.

Before launching the Seniors Helping Seniors franchise, Mike had been employed by the Social Security Administration for 18½ years and was about six years away from earning a pension. Melissa had been a kindergarten teacher for 11 years, then a stay-at-home mom in Cincinnati.

When they decided to switch careers, Florida beckoned. The Walters family, which includes 14-, 13- and 9-year-old sons, had often vacationed there, and the parents saw it as a likely retirement destination. “Then we thought, ‘Why wait?’ ” Mike says. They explored opportunities there with a franchise consultant and looked closely at six brands. “We quickly whittled down to three,” he says. Then he and Melissa met the couple who runs the franchise operation, Daniel Jan and Namrata Yocom-Jan, and fell in love with the Seniors Helping Seniors family.

“We signed our franchise agreement in January 2022,” says Mike, who admits feeling some uncertainty as they made their leap. “We didn\’t know if we were making the right move at the right time, but we put one foot in front of the other and simply kept moving forward. The people we were meeting along the way energized us to go another day.”

A Collaborative Environment

Seniors Helping Seniors home office was always available to offer support and guidance. Each franchise operates independently and uses its creativity in powering the business. Mike and Melissa explain they wouldn’t be where they are today without their amazing coach, Howard Algeo.

But Mike credits other Seniors Helping Seniors owners with being another valuable resource who generously take time to share tips, best practices and solutions that have evolved while operating their franchises. Now that he has some franchise-ownership experience of his own, Mike pays it forward by advising newer franchisees in the system when they reach out.

The more Mike and Melissa learn about Seniors Helping Seniors, the better they feel about their decision to invest. “Seniors Helping Seniors\’ unique approach to home health care focuses on hiring qualified, able-bodied mature adults to be caregivers. They provide relatability, reliability, empathy and an overall higher quality of care,” he says. “This is not a job to our caregivers — it\’s a calling. They have the heart of a volunteer, and we just happen to pay them.”
