AI in Franchising: 5 Ways It’s Changing Business Success

Why Leadership, Adaptability and Human Connections are More Important than Ever for Franchise Success

SUMMARY BOX FINAL
  • AI in franchising is changing how franchise owners operate, compete and grow their businesses.
  • Human skills like leadership, communication and trust are becoming more important as AI advances.
  • AI tools can help franchise owners save time, improve efficiency and deliver more personalized customer experiences.
  • Success with AI in franchising depends on combining technology with adaptability, strong leadership and lasting relationships.

AI in franchising is changing how business owners operate, compete and serve their customers. For franchise owners, it presents an interesting opportunity: Technology can take on more of the work involved in running a business, giving owners more time to focus on the people and relationships that make it successful.

But this shift also has another side. As AI becomes more capable, the human skills that technology cannot easily replicate are becoming increasingly valuable.

Having spent years working in leadership development and franchising, I believe the greatest opportunity isn’t just saving time and resources with AI. It’s using this evolving technology to strengthen the parts of a business that depend on human expertise, judgment, and connection.

Here are five interesting ways in which AI is changing the world of franchising:

1. Human “Soft” Skills are a Competitive Advantage

AI is making it easier and faster to analyze data, generate recommendations, and automate routine tasks. However, it can’t replace distinctly human skills like judgment, empathy, and trust. When everyone has access to AI, these so-called “soft skills” are the real competitive advantage.

As technology takes over more administrative and analytical work, franchisors and franchise owners can spend less time on routine tasks and more time building their business in innovative ways.

Leaders who invest in developing skills such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, and coaching will have a clear advantage over their competitors who choose not to.  For example, according to Grammarly and The Harris Poll’s State of Business Communication research, U.S. businesses lose an estimated $1.2 trillion a year to poor communication. Three in four business leaders say they spend  too much time dealing with collateral damage that is the result of miscommunication, and one in five execs has lost business because their message didn’t land.

Owners must also know when to trust technology and when a situation calls for human judgment. As a 1979 IBM training module once said, “A computer can never be held accountable; therefore, a computer must never make a management decision.”

As businesses introduce AI into everyday operations, one element should not be overlooked: people. Owners, employees, and customers remain critical parts of any successful business.

Each stakeholder may have concerns about the rapid changes AI brings. Human leadership is the key to addressing those concerns while adapting to the new normal. In fact, according to Microsoft’s 2026 research on AI transformation, employees whose managers create psychological safety are 1.4 times as likely to use agentic AI frequently.

The lesson for franchisors and franchise owners is clear. Investing in technology matters, but investing in the people expected to use it matters just as much.

2. Adaptability Is Becoming Essential to Business Success

Franchise systems have traditionally offered entrepreneurs the advantage of a proven business model. That remains valuable, but even established systems must evolve as technology changes customer expectations and business operations.

We have already experienced extremely rapid change as the result of AI’s fast evolution and the pace at which AI tools are advancing is continuing to accelerate. Business leaders who are unwilling to embrace change and adapt are being left behind.  Over the next three to five years, I believe adaptability will become one of the most important qualities of successful franchise owners.

This doesn’t mean adopting every new AI tool that appears. It means being willing to evaluate opportunities, challenge established processes, and adjust when a better approach becomes available.

Adaptability also means bringing employees and other stakeholders along through the change. It will take real leadership to help people embrace these changes. The ability to manage change without losing focus on customers, employees, or business goals will be increasingly important.

3. AI in Franchising Helps Small Business Owners Work More Efficiently

One of AI’s most promising advantages is its potential to give small business owners access to capabilities that previously required additional staff or outside resources.

Many service-based franchise owners operate with lean teams, sometimes managing most business functions themselves. Between marketing, prospecting, sales, customer communication, and administrative responsibilities, there are only so many hours in the day.

Crestcom franchise owners typically operate with few, if any, additional staff. AI tools now help with time-consuming tasks like drafting marketing content, organizing customer information, tracking sales pipelines, and more. This gives business owners more client-facing time to build relationships, ask thoughtful questions, and determine how to address clients’current and future needs.

4. Customers Will Continue to Expect More Personalization

As personalized algorithms and customized digital assistants like Alexa and Siri have evolved, customers have come to expect businesses to understand their individual needs and preferences. One-size-fits-all is no longer enough.

AI will empower franchise owners to deliver more personalized experiences by analyzing customer information, identifying behavior patterns, and recommending relevant services or solutions.

However, personalization should never come at the expense of genuine customer relationships. Technology may help identify what a customer needs, but experienced professionals still bring context, empathy, and judgment to the conversation.

The strongest businesses will combine AI efficiency with the personal attention that builds customer loyalty.

5. Trust and Relationships Remain at the Heart of Successful Businesses

Perhaps the most important change AI brings to franchising is a renewed appreciation for the value of human connection.

At Crestcom, I’ve seen what people gain from learning alongside each other in our leadership development courses. Not only do our facilitators recognize nuances in conversations and provide expertise earned from real-life experience, but participants learn from each other, make connections and build lasting professional relationships. Those experiences can’t be replicated by AI.

The same principle applies to franchising.

Whether an owner provides consulting, training, home services, or another customer-focused offering, lasting relationships are built through reliability, understanding, and consistent follow-through.

As AI makes information and basic services more accessible, customers may value businesses that demonstrate genuine expertise and deliver measurable results even more.

For prospective franchise owners, keep this in mind when evaluating an opportunity. Look beyond how a business uses technology. Consider what makes its services valuable, how it builds customer trust, and whether it can demonstrate meaningful outcomes.

The Future Belongs to Businesses That Combine Both

AI will keep changing how franchise businesses operate, and I believe it will create opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to adapt.

But technology alone won’t determine which businesses succeed.

The franchise owners who use AI to improve efficiency, embrace continuous learning, and invest in the human capabilities that make their businesses valuable will find the most success.

The goal should never be to remove people from the equation. It should be to give people more time, better information, and greater opportunities to do what they do best.
