Smith’s Expertise Spans Franchise Development, Restaurant Operations, Sales and Financial Services
PIRTEK USA, a Florida-based provider of mobile and retail hydraulic and industrial hose services, has appointed Doug Smith vice president of franchise development. Smith’s background spans restaurant operations, sales and financial services. He most recently served as senior vice president of franchise development for BELFOR Franchise Group. In his new role, Smith leads PIRTEK USA’s nationwide franchise expansion.
“PIRTEK has many of the characteristics I believe make a franchise system compelling: a proven business model, impressive corporate support, strong recurring need for its services, multiple revenue opportunities and a concept that provides a very tangible value to its customers,” Smith said. “Hydraulic and industrial hose service may not be the first industry people think of when they think about franchising, but that is actually part of what makes PIRTEK so interesting. When equipment goes down because of a failed hose, customers need a solution quickly. PIRTEK’s combination of retail service centers and mobile sales and service units address a real, mission-critical business need. It’s an essential business whose customers are largely essential businesses, as well. That combination is very attractive to me.”
Smith views sustainable franchise growth as more than just awarding franchises. “I’m excited to continue strengthening the entire development process — from lead generation and broker relationships to candidate engagement, qualification and the Mutual Evaluation Process. The goal is sustainable growth, putting the right franchise owners in the right markets. Ultimately, I want us to continue building a development organization that can scale alongside the brand without sacrificing the quality of the franchisees we bring into the system.”
He also emphasized the importance of continually evaluating how buyers find and research opportunities. “The franchise development landscape continues to evolve, and brands must be willing to adapt their marketing, technology, lead-generation strategies and candidate experience accordingly, especially in today’s technology- and AI-based environment,” he said. “At the same time, the fundamentals haven’t changed: Have a strong business model, know who your ideal franchisee is, communicate your value proposition clearly, respond quickly to candidates and build trust throughout the process. Growth for the sake of growth isn’t the objective — quality growth is.”
Kim Gubera, CEO of PIRTEK USA and PIRTEK Canada, said Smith’s franchise development expertise and network of relationships with consultants make him the ideal person for this role. “His ability to build credibility with consultants and understand what candidates are seeking will be invaluable as we continue to expand our franchise network. We’re excited to welcome him to TEAM PIRTEK, and I am confident he will play an important role in driving our continued growth,” Gubera said.
Smith credited his parents for encouraging him to pursue a variety of experiences from a young age, including becoming an Eagle Scout, playing the violin and competing in baseball and football. He even started a lawn mowing business at age 12. “Looking back, each of those experiences taught me something that has stayed with me throughout my life and career. Scouting gave me a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and taught me the importance of preparation, leadership and self-reliance. Playing the violin gave me the confidence to perform in front of an audience, while sports taught me the value of teamwork — and that our success depends on everyone understanding their role and doing their part.”
Smith lives in Tennessee with his wife, and he finds great meaning in being a grandfather.
