Franchisee Ken Sandy Brings Contents Restoration and Calm to Families After Disasters in the D.C. Area
Ken Sandy had already built a successful dry cleaning business from scratch when he saw an opportunity to do something more. He wanted to serve his local Washington, D.C. community in a deeper, more meaningful way.
Six years ago, he found that opportunity by adding a FRSTeam franchise to his existing business. FRSTeam specializes in contents restoration, helping families and businesses recover belongings damaged by fire, smoke, water and other disasters.
For Sandy, the work felt like a natural extension of service. FRSTeam steps in after a loss to restore the items people depend on and the keepsakes they cannot replace. The franchise restores textiles and fabrics such as clothing, bedding, draperies, rugs and stuffed animals; electronics such as TVs, computers and office equipment; and hard contents such as furniture, décor, artwork, antiques and kitchen appliances. It also provides pickup and delivery, photo documentation, secure storage, non-restorable inventory support and commercial restoration services.
When a call comes in, FRSTeam carefully catalogs, packs and transports damaged belongings to a secure facility, where they are cleaned, deodorized and restored whenever possible. Essential items such as work clothes, school uniforms, bedding or personal electronics are often prioritized through rush orders so families can get back to daily life more quickly.
“We meet people in moments of disruption,” Sandy says. “There’s loss, confusion and a lot of unknowns. Our role is to bring clarity, to bring calm and help them take that next step forward.” He says restoration gave him the community connection he craved. “It put me in rooms where people weren’t just looking for a service… they needed someone to steady the moment,” he says.
Local Heroes
Sandy employs a team of 48 serving Northern Virginia, D.C. and down through Richmond, and says the mindset never changes: Every job is a local job. “Being local means you’re accountable,” Sandy says. “You don’t hide behind a logo; you show up, you answer, you stand on your work. It’s personal and it should be.”
A typical day is built around personal interaction: visiting job sites, making partner visits and working on team alignment. At other times, Sandy is jumping in his truck to meet a homeowner facing a catastrophe.
“We’ve walked into total losses where families felt like everything was gone physically and emotionally,” he says. “Being able to guide them, document their story and advocate for a fair outcome… that’s more than restoration. That’s helping someone find stability again.”
Benefits of Franchising
Content restoration is an in-demand and recession-resilient business. As natural disasters continue to increase, the market is estimated at $250 billion a year, according to Mordor Intelligence.
FRSTeam provides franchise owners with proven restoration expertise along with national brand recognition, lead generation and technical support, all of which allows local owners to concentrate on the day-to-day. “FRSTeam had the structure and I knew we could bring the heart. That combination felt powerful.”
Beacon of Good
It isn’t lost on Sandy that he is often working with people experiencing the worst day of their lives. But he says that showing up consistently, leading with compassion and staying present is what helps to build a successful business and lasting connections.
“The balance of it is you’re part of something bigger, but your impact is felt right where you stand,” he says. “You get to build something meaningful in your own community.”
