Crumb-Swirled Treat Will Be Offered Nationwide on Feb. 21

In what sounds like a really sweet deal with Girls Scouts of the USA, Wendy’s will soon add the Thin Mints® Frosty to its menu. The limited-time temptation will consist of a crumbly swirl of the craveable cookie into the customer’s choice of either a chocolate or vanilla Frosty. It will be offered at Wendy’s locations nationwide starting Feb. 21.

The fast-food brand announced the Thin Mints Frosty on Monday, calling it a pairing of “iconic fan favorites” in a minty treat that entices with a chocolatey bonus. In a news release quoted by USA Today, Wendy’s said: “Everyone knows Thin Mints are extra-delicious when frozen (Girl Scout’s Honor), so Wendy’s is giving you another delicious way to experience the frozen flavor a Girl Scouts best-seller! Each bite pairs minty-chocolatey, crumbly, cookie butter texture with the cool, creamy Frosty.”

About Thin Mints

The Thin Mints Frosty will leverage the long, successful track record of this particular Girl Scout Cookie, which debuted in 1939, per Yahoo. Doing a little math for you here, this means that Thin Mints will mark their 86th birthday this year. Girl Scouts first began selling other cookies in 1917, and were selling only three types of cookies – Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mints, which are now called Thin Mints – by 1951, the organization says on its website.

In addition to its longevity chops, Thin Mints also are the organization’s best-selling cookie, according to National Public Radio and Top-business-degrees.net, making up 25% of all cookie sales. Coming in second at 19% of sales are Samoas and Caramel deLites, which are the same cookies but just sold with two different names on the packaging.

Thin Mints and Samoas will again make up a major share of the Girl Scouts’ cookie fundraiser this year, with $6 per box being the average price. The scouts’ other cookie offerings will be Adventurefuls, Caramel Chocolate Chip, Do-si-dos/Peanut Butter Sandwich (same cookie/different labeling), Girl Scout S’mores, Lemonades, Lemon-Ups, Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs, Toast-Yay!, Toffee-tastic and Trefoils. The Girl Scouts recently revealed that S’mores and Toast-Yay! flavors will be retiring after this year, the USA Today article pointed out.

Wendy’s Collaborations

In its report on the upcoming Frosty flavor, People magazine noted that Wendy’s is keeping mum about how long the collaborative Thin Mints Frosty will stay on its menus. But a Wendy’s representative did confirm with the magazine that the Thin Mints Frosty would be available throughout the Girl Scout Cookie selling period at minimum.

Wendy’s has been leaning into innovative deals of late. In October, it teamed up with Paramount to offer the Wendy’s Krabby Patty Kollab burger and Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty to help celebrate the SpongeBob SquarePants television show’s 25th anniversary. And a web article from NBC’s Today program noted that in December of last year, Wendy’s released its annual batch of Frosty Key Tags, which entitles holders to free Frostys for an entire year; the $3 tags are available for purchase through Feb. 15.

A Competing Treat from Dairy Queen?

In a pre-emptive move on the sweet-tooth front, People magazine reported that Dairy Queen on Monday began offering two Valentine’s Day-related promotions. One is its Red Velvet Cake Blizzard Treat, which is cake pieces and cream cheese icing blended with the chain’s trademark vanilla soft-serve ice cream. Upping the romantic angle a bit is DQ’s heart-shaped Red Velvet Blizzard Cupid Cake consisting of layered soft-serve ice cream, pieces of red velvet cake and cream cheese icing that are topped a layer of the Red Velvet Cake Blizzard Treat. Parade magazine stated that the Valentine’s Day-linked treats are available at select Dairy Queen locations now but will be on menus nationwide in February.
