The transition from serving in the Coast Guard to owning a HouseMaster franchise in Santa Barbara, Calif. was seamless for Shelby Hendrix (above), thanks to the values of discipline, leadership and service he carried with him. “In the Coast Guard, everything was about serving others and being accountable,” he says. “That’s exactly what my business is about — delivering top-notch service and making sure my clients feel taken care of.”

Leadership Lessons

Hendrix’s time in the Coast Guard, from 2014 to 2018, prepared him for the rigors of business ownership. He spent most of his service on a Coast Guard cutter, conducting drug interdiction missions in Central and South America. The experience of managing teams under stressful circumstances was invaluable.

“I worked with people of all ages and backgrounds in the Coast Guard. That taught me how to motivate and lead a team effectively,” he shares. His ability to remain calm and focused has been essential in the home inspection business, particularly in areas like Santa Barbara, where transactions can be high-stress due to the expensive property values. “I don’t get worked up easily.”

After his military service, Hendrix worked as a tugboat captain in the Bay Area, later moving to Seattle and Portland, Ore. When the pandemic hit, it prompted him to reconsider his career path. At the time, his uncle, who owned a HouseMaster franchise for over a decade, was looking to retire. “When my uncle put the business up for sale, I started thinking about it. It seemed fun and lucrative,” Hendrix recalls. After thoroughly researching the market and the franchise, he purchased the business in August 2023.

The HouseMaster Franchise Opportunity

HouseMaster, a Neighborly company, is one of the oldest and most recognized home inspection franchises in the U.S., established in 1979. With over 4 million inspections completed, the brand offers a strong support system and comprehensive training. “HouseMaster gives me the tools to succeed, from marketing help to ongoing education,” says Hendrix. He values the peer network for sharing ideas and strategies. During his transition, Hendrix worked closely with his uncle and retained his uncle’s longtime employee, whore mains on his team as an inspector.

Hendrix plans to expand his business steadily, currently operating with one employee. “Three inspectors would be the sweet spot,” he says. HouseMaster also provides ongoing support, including marketing materials and website management. “They just built a new website for me, and any changes I need are handled quickly,” Hendrix adds. “Having corporate support is a big help when you don’t have time to create everything from scratch.”

Hendrix believes he is successful because he goes the extra mile for customers. “This is a relationship-based business,” he notes. “Even though the company provides a call center, I like to talk to the customers myself to provide that personal touch, especially when people have questions about home inspections.”

The franchise offers a one-year guarantee on inspections, which means that if anything rated as satisfactory in the report needs repair within a year, Hendrix and his team will cover the cost. “It really puts us on the hook to be thorough,” Hendrix explains. “But that’s OK with me. It’s all about doing right by the client. It’s a great business. I’m always learning something new, and it’s rewarding to know I’m helping people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives — buying a home,” Hendrix says.

Demand for Home Inspections

The U.S. has a booming home inspection market, which is on track for impressive growth. According to Home Inspection Trends, the industry is expected to reach $2.5 billion by 2029, reflecting the increasing demand for thorough home evaluations.
