Custom Storage Franchise Offers Flexibility, Freedom and Fulfillment
Ruben Galvan veered sharply off his corporate career path into his dream of entrepreneurship when he launched ShelfGenie of San Marcos, Calif., in October 2023. Galvan has zero regrets about investing in the ShelfGenie custom storage franchise, which he says embraces owners of every stripe.
“The ShelfGenie franchise system is known for its diversity, creating opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds to thrive. ShelfGenie welcomes franchisees from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds. Many owners have transitioned from careers in corporate leadership, education, health care, military service and more. The franchise emphasizes the importance of entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to customer satisfaction “over industry-specific experience,” Galvan says.
He also praises the open arms of ShelfGenie’s culture. “Corporate leadership fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture emphasizing teamwork, respect and mutual support. This creates an environment where people from all backgrounds feel valued and supported.”
An Inclusive Mindset
Galvan ensures that same inclusiveness spills over to his ShelfGenie team and customers. “Drawing on my extensive background in human resources management, I prioritize people as well as performance. I’m committed to creating a culture where team members and customers feel valued and respected. By respecting diversity, championing inclusion and fostering collaboration, I aim to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute and thrive.
”In fact, ShelfGenie’s overarching empowerment was a key reason that Galvan and his wife, Irma, decided to invest. “The corporate team’s commitment to our success was evident, and they demonstrated a genuine willingness to provide substantial support to help us build and grow our business. In addition, ShelfGenie has scalability and growth potential. The customizable, in-demand solutions for home organization offered a unique market opportunity with significant room for expansion. We serve homeowners looking to optimize their living spaces without major renovations.” Another plus, he adds: The 25-year-old brand has a proven track record that inspires consumer trust. Its consultative design process results in loyal customers and referrals.
Above all, though, “Irma and I wanted a business that we both could be passionate about,” Galvan says. “We were captivated by the transformative nature of ShelfGenie’s customized glide-out shelving and storage solutions. They bring a positive impact to customers’ lives in terms of accessibility, organization and usability.”
Despite ShelfGenie’s specialized service and products, franchisees don’t need professional design and remodeling backgrounds. “The franchise provides robust training, marketing and operational support to entrepreneurs so they don’t need experience in the home improvement industry,” he says.
Facing Challenges
That’s not to say there won’t be challenges. “Transitioning from a corporate environment to entrepreneurship involves adapting to a new mindset and mastering the intricacies of the ShelfGenie franchise model, including operations, marketing and customer engagement. Another challenge was recruiting and training a team, one that shares our vision and commitment to excellent customer service. This was time-intensive and super-critical to success. We were learning, running the business, and trying to teach others all at the same time,” Galvan says. “Navigating market nuances has been another significant challenge. Every market has its unique demographics, preferences and competitive landscape. Learning and adjusting to these local dynamics can be a steep learning curve.
“Lastly, learning how to balance our workload versus our personal life was challenging. As new business owners, we wore many hats — from marketing to operations to customer relations. We had to prioritize tasks effectively, and learning how to communicate as business co-owners versus husband and wife took some time and adjustment.
“But overcoming challenges, seeing the business grow and building a loyal customer base gives us shared victories. It’s been incredibly fulfilling, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Transitioning from corporate life to business ownership gives you the freedom to chart your own the freedom to chart your own course and align your work with your personal values and goals. The greatest reward has been sharing this journey with Irma.”
