If you feel a cold coming on, want to boost your immunity, enhance your workouts or improve your sleep, you don’t always need to rely on medicine or visit a doctor. “Come to Pause,” says John Klein, co-founder and CEO of Pause, a wellness franchise that offers an array of innovative services that focus on preventative health. Offerings run the gamut from float therapy to infrared sauna to cold plunges and more.

As the name implies, Pause is where people can prioritize self-care. “Look at our name. The idea is to hit the pause button and relax. We set out to create life-changing, memorable experiences through services that improve health and help reduce the impact of physical and mental stress on your body and mind.”

With over 15 years of experience in health and wellness, Klein was instrumental in driving the growth of industry disruptors like Equinox and SoulCycle. He and long-time colleague Jeff Ono identified a gap in the market and teamed up to launch an innovative new venture. “We recognized a white space in proactive wellness, where people can focus on preventing illness rather than merely reacting to it. Traditionally, the emphasis has been on treating symptoms rather than addressing the root cause,” Klein explains. “But that’s changing.” In 2016, he and Ono founded Pause to provide comprehensive solutions that help people maintain their health.

The Wellness Boom

Wellness franchises are growing quickly. According to the Statista, the global wellness market was valued at $5.61 trillion in 2022 and is expected to grow by 8.6% annually, reaching over $8 trillion by 2027. Klein believes the pandemic made people more aware of the importance of maintaining their health. “Covid taught us the value of being the best version of ourselves. Pause is thriving in this new environment, offering services that address stress, immunity and overall well-being.”

Pause launched with a single location in Venice, California, initially offering flotation therapy and infrared sauna sessions. As the business grew, the studio expanded its service offerings to include cold plunges, cryotherapy, LED beds, compression sleeves, and medical treatments like vitamin infusions. “We envisioned creating a brand that not only provided solutions but also equipped us with the resources and tools to scale across multiple verticals,” Klein explains.

Preventative Health Movement

Pause’s approach to wellness is unique. It focuses on helping clients prevent health issues rather than just treating them after they arise. This proactive model is not only appealing to clients but also good for business.

The preventative health franchise offers three ways for guests to engage: a la carte sessions, memberships and packages. Memberships, which range from $179 to $499 per month depending on the market, offer flexibility and savings, encouraging repeat visits and steady income for franchisees. The studio operates efficiently, requiring only a small team to manage daily operations. “However, this is not a semi-absentee business,” Klein cautions. “Franchisees need to promote with grassroots marketing, be in the studios, watch key performance indicators and engage.”

Studios are open 12 hrs a day, seven days a week, with a nurse on site seven hours a day. At peak times, two front desk associates are needed to greet and engage with customers and flip rooms. A strong general manager is essential to run day-to-day operations.

Pause is dedicated to staying ahead of wellness trends. “We conduct extensive research and thoroughly vet all our services, always looking for published data to back them up. Our offerings are specifically designed to boost immunity, enhance workouts, promote blood flow, and accelerate recovery,” Klein explains. “As people become more informed about proactive health, the demand for these services will only grow. We’re perfectly positioned to meet that demand.”

This fall, Pause is set to reach the significant milestone of 100 locations. “When we decided to franchise in 2022, we knew we needed a partner with deep expertise in health and wellness, as well as the ability to scale brands effectively. That’s why we teamed up with the franchise growth experts at REP’M Group. Their experience has been invaluable, particularly their BUILD’M construction division, which has consistently kept our buildouts running smoothly at a competitive price.”

Klein is enthusiastic about expanding into more communities, including smaller markets that might not otherwise have access to Pause’s unique services. “I love seeing our brand expand through franchising,” Klein notes. “It allows people from all over the country to bring these valuable wellness services to their communities. We’re thrilled to make a positive impact on more lives.”
