Food Franchises Celebrate With Promotions and Specials
Presidents Day, celebrated annually on the third Monday of February, commemorates the birthday of George Washington and, in some states, the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. The national holiday, which falls on Feb. 17 this year, is also understood by many to honor all presidents.
The history dates to the 1880s after Washington’s death when Americans commemorated his Feb. 22 birthday as a day of remembrance. President Rutherford B. Hayes established Washington’s Birthday as a national holiday in 1879.
The date of the holiday, which was moved from Washington’s actual birthdate to the third Monday in February, resulted from the passage of the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which went into effect in 1971. This law designated certain federal holidays including Washington’s Birthday to be observed on Mondays to give federal workers more three-day weekends and stimulate the economy by creating more free time for shopping. “When they talked about the three-day weekend, they said, this will be good for business. They didn’t sugarcoat it,” said Jeffrey Engel, executive director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, in a The New York Times article.
Presidents Day was not officially adopted as the name of the holiday, but it became the commonly accepted name, due in part to retailers’ use of it for sales and promotions – and who doesn’t love a three-day weekend and discounted kitchen appliances and mattresses?
But Presidents Day is more than mattress and appliance sales. Restaurant franchises also are getting in on the fun with patriotic deals and discounts on Feb. 17. Read on for a small compilation of participating brands.
