September 18 is the day America celebrates one of its most beloved creations — the cheeseburger. National Cheeseburger Day honors the classic comfort food and has a rich history dating back to 1926.
It all started when 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger was flipping burgers at his father’s sandwich shop in Pasadena, Calif. According to National Today, the exact details of how it happened are a bit hazy. Some say curiosity led Sternberger to add cheese to the sizzling burger on the grill, while others claim a homeless man passing by made the suggestion. In any case, he found a way to make the hamburger even better!
Today, Americans have a clear favorite when it comes to topping their burgers: A whopping 70% of Americans prefer American cheese, followed by 59% who choose cheddar, 40% like Swiss best and 39% go for mozzarella. Since the average American eats an estimated three burgers a week, it’s not surprising that burger franchises like Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, Wayback Burgers, BurgerFi and more have sprung up to meet the great demand.

Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar
While every day feels like National Cheeseburger Day at Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, the restaurant franchise is celebrating September 18 by offering guests its All American-Burger (above) for just $8. Customers can pair it with French fries or tots to complete the meal!
Bar Louie
On September 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., fans of Bar Louie can enjoy the Louie’s Choice Cheeseburger (above), featuring white cheddar and Louie Sauce and served with fries or tots for only $9.95. Pricing and participation may vary by location.
