Originally known as Decoration Day, the solemn holiday dates back to the Civil War, when Americans decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and recited prayers – traditions that continue to this day.
While Memorial Day serves as a time of remembrance, it also marks the unofficial start of summer. Many Americans celebrate with outdoor gatherings, barbecues and spending time with family and friends. Fast-food franchises across the country are recognizing the occasion by rolling out discounts and deals to help customers celebrate and show their patriotism.
