IFA Foundation Scholarships Open for Applications

Awards Honor Franchise Icons “Doc” Cohen, Fred DeLuca and More

The International Franchise Association asks for help in spreading the word that its IFA Foundation is giving away scholarships that aim to jump-start students’ future careers in franchising. Applications should be submitted to Foundation@franchise.org no later than Nov. 30. Following is a look at the scholarships, prerequisites for receiving them, and links to forms that must be completed in order to apply.

Doc Cohen Franchising Scholarship

This is a one-time competitive scholarship in the amount of $3,000. It is named for Lawrence “Doc” Cohen, who franchised Great American Cookies in 1977 and is the first franchisee inducted into the IFA Hall of Fame. Scholarship candidates must be U.S. citizens enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university with a major or primary focus in business, finance, marketing, food service, hospitality, franchising or entrepreneurship. Applicants also are required to submit a business plan up to 10 pages long regarding a business concept.

In addition to the $3,000 grant, the Doc Cohen Franchising Scholarship includes free registration for the scholarship recipient to attend the IFA Annual Convention. There’s also a travel stipend of as much as $1,500 for travel and accommodations related to attending the convention.

Fred DeLuca Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship was established by the IFA Foundation and Fred DeLuca Foundation in memory of the Subway restaurant franchise’s co-founder. This competitive one-time award provides financial aid for an individual studying business and entrepreneurship or franchise management. Every applicant is required to be U.S. citizen enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. The Fred DeLuca Scholarship recipient will also receive complimentary registration to attend IFA’s Annual Convention and a travel stipend of up to $1,500 to attend the convention.

Stewart and Jane Bainum Foundation Scholarship

The IFA Foundation and the Stewart and Jane Bainum Fund of the Community Foundation have partnered to provide four of these competitive annual scholarships. Each of the four recipients will receive $2,500 and will be given a complimentary registration to attend IFA’s Annual Convention and a travel stipend of as much as $1,500, too. To be eligible for the one-time Bainum scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university and be studying business, hospitality or franchise management.
  • Be a sophomore, junior or senior during the period of the scholarship.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
