Patients spoke and HealthSource founder and CEO Dr. Chris Tomshack listened. They repeatedly complained that chiropractic treatments failed them because problems returned. Dr. Tomshack, a doctor of chiropractic, dug deeper to learn those patients had received dated methods of care that led to disappointing results. He insisted on state-of-the-art treatments at his successful, tech-driven chain of Ohio chiropractic clinics, which led the industry in patient-generated referrals. To raise standards throughout the profession and create excellent outcomes for patients as well as for clinic owners, Tomshack franchised HealthSource in 2006.

“Our primary service is the elimination of back and neck pain,” he says. “Half of all adults in the U.S. have chronic or almost daily back pain, and 80% of adults will suffer a very significant bout of back pain in their lives. We fix this huge problem, get people back to work quicker with less expense, and get people back to living life on their terms.

“When someone breaks an arm or leg or simply sprains an ankle, you cast it or support it and life goes on. When your back goes out, life stops. A compressed nerve or herniated disc in your back or neck causes severe pain that prevents normal living. Our advanced model is not your dad’s chiropractic care. Your dad wouldn’t recognize what we do because it is highly advanced and it generates exceptional results. We literally change lives.”

Technology-Driven Franchise

Cutting-edge treatments and technology set HealthSource apart, Dr. Tomshack says. “We’re committed to being the most tech-forward brand in the chiropractic industry so that our offices deliver the best results in every community in which we’re present. These results translate into industry-leading metrics for owners as well. When your life’s work is giving millions of people back their lives while generating strong revenue for the business owners, how can you not wake up every morning with passion to burn?”

HealthSource technology has another huge bonus: It allows franchisees to easily learn and implement the brand’s processes and then scale upward. The brand’s business systems are designed for high efficiency, which allows for a labor-light team. HealthSource’s patient care and business systems comprise a model that is well-suited for clinics owned by non-chiropractic entrepreneurs and for investors.

Today, HealthSource leads chiropractic in technology and has a 99% satisfaction rating from the patients served by the brand’s 135 clinics, Dr. Tomshack says. The franchise has locations in 35 states and is expanding rapidly, with the mission of delivering optimum results for people in pain as well as strong returns for franchisees.

Q&A: Dr. Chris Tomshack, HealthSource

1. What does leadership mean to you?

I’m a former officer in the U.S. Air Force, and my military service taught me how to evolve from a manager into a leader. To me, leadership is a critical skill set that enables one to clearly and effectively create an atmosphere of positive influence within an organization. In turn, positive influence aligns the direction of the organization towards achieving the strategic and tactical mission.

2. Please share your favorite mantra or motto in business.

Back in business college, we studied Peter Drucker, the father of modern leadership and management. He stated that “culture eats strategy for breakfast all day long.” I love that quote and do my best to live it. The culture of an organization is everything, and that’s what I focus on most intensely.

3. What is your greatest career accomplishment?

This is easy to answer. I am most proud of the fact that an independent third party found that collectively, HealthSource patients all over America gave us a 99% satisfaction rating. I’ll put that up against any other organization in our industry. In fact, I’ll put it up against any other company, period!

4. Whom do you admire in franchising and why?

I have a strong list of people I greatly admire in franchising, but I’ll trim it down to three. First, Ray Kroc, because he literally transformed an entire industry while creating profound success for his franchisees. Second, Tom Monaghan, because his singular focus on highly efficient and scalable operational systems catapulted Domino’s Pizza to the very top of an extremely large industry. Third, John Rotche from Franworth, because not only has he done it at the top of the game, but he also mentors other founders to shorten the learning curve of building amazing brands.

5. What qualities do you seek in your team?

The most important quality I look for when interviewing new team members is the ability to seamlessly fit into our culture. Culture trumps strategy. There are a ton of great executers but finding the person who already values what we create, how we create it and who we create it with is of paramount importance. I don’t possess the power to change a person’s values, so finding people who value what we value and to the level that we value it is critical to our continued growth and success.

6. Why do you love franchising?

I love franchising because through the principle of leverage, we have the ability to affect so many more people and communities than we could ever do on our own. And in doing so, franchising enables us to create incredible business opportunities for many more people. In turn, this action creates thousands of really good careers and jobs in communities all over the U.S.

7. What do you hope your legacy will be?

I hope that my legacy will be that I was a fantastic husband, dad and friend while also being the leader of a company that evolved the chiropractic profession to a level that far surpassed the previous standard. In doing so, we’ll be able to make a huge dent in the statistic that 50% of American adults suffer chronic back pain, bringing it down to a much smaller number. Accomplishing that goal enables my legacy to also include the creation of a large number of ultra-successful business owners who in turn create well-paying careers for countless others.
