A Few Shows a Year Brings in a Pipeline of Leads for the Home Renovation Business

After spending almost 30 years as a project manager and senior executive in the oil and gas industry, Kevin Revere was ready for a change. When he came across the Refresh Renovations franchise opportunity, he was intrigued. The New Zealand-based home renovation franchise leveraged local home shows and had a unique business model that made sense to him. Instead of simply pricing out jobs with no real detail like most contractors do, Refresh Renovations works with clients to create custom renderings based on their needs — and then they price out the job. And by the way, the customer pays for those services up-front.

“We find out what motivates our clients and what their tastes are. Do they want to sell in a few years or stay for the long term? Do they entertain frequently or work from home?” he says. “Once we gather all of these details, we can generate a very reliable quote. This creates a trust factor and wins clients over. It also protects margins.”

Our business model is addressing a real market need.

Local Home Shows

When Revere opened Refresh Renovations of South Houston in February 2022, he got started several weeks earlier than he initially planned. He was advised by the Refresh Renovations support team to take advantage of local home shows, and it just so happened that a big one was coming to his area. Revere jumped right in and set up a booth at the local home show. And he was glad he did. “I left that first show with $1.5 million in leads. I realized then that our business model is addressing a real market need,” he says. Revere figures that if he attends three local home shows a year, he can fill his pipeline of leads.

Revere has used digital marketing tools to bring in business, but the local home shows have given him the best ROI. At the moment, Revere has two full-time employees (a construction manager and an account manager) along with a network of subcontractors who do the hands-on work. Revere spends his time monitoring clients throughout the process, pricing projects and visiting job sites. He plans to hire a project manager in 2023.

Revere attributes his success to taking a proactive approach to running the business. He says that collaborating with fellow franchisees, hiring the right people and taking advantage of everything the company has to offer have made all the difference.
