Career Change After Corporate: Why Franchising Makes Sense

Career Change After Corporate Life: Why Franchising Makes Sense

Franchising Helps Professionals Shift From Corporate Life to Business Success

For many professionals, a corporate career offers reliability, security, steady income and fancy titles. But at some point, one can’t help but wonder if that is all that is in store for them. Some may be feeling the monotony of the same old grind, day in and day out. Others may worry about a looming downsizing or a shift in structure. Or simply, burnout. At that point, the big question is asked: “What’s next for me?”

Every year, thousands of corporate leaders, middle managers and seasoned professionals begin the search for something different — usually something more fulfilling, more flexible, and with more control. In my business, I have personally spoken with numerous corporate refugees whose number one reason is gaining more control over the money they earn, their time and success. Many seasoned professionals tell me they are tired of working hard for someone else and not reaping the full rewards of their efforts.

For many, the answer is business ownership. But not just any business. A growing number of professionals are turning to franchise ownership for the next chapter of their lives — and for good reason.

Career Change After Corporate Life

It can be a daunting and overwhelming experience to start a business from scratch, especially with no prior startup experience. Aspiring entrepreneurs are often left wondering: Where do I start? How do I get there? What steps do I take first? How much money do I really need? And so on.

Franchising makes a very sensible career change after corporate life because it offers the unique balance of owning your own business with the full support and structure of a proven brand. You are in business for yourself, not by yourself. Franchising is especially appealing for those who have never owned a business before, thanks to its proven playbook. It truly is plug and play.

The benefits of owning a franchise include stepping into a model with:

  • A recognized brand name
  • Robust training in all aspects of the business and systems
  • Technology packages and marketing plans
  • Ongoing support from a franchisor who wants you to succeed
  • A proven playbook so you’re not trying to figure it out alone
  • Buying power for goods and services at a lower cost to you
  • Lower failure rate and lower risk

Plus, there are franchise opportunities in just about every industry and for every budget — from home services and wellness to mobility franchises, to food, fitness, beauty and even lab testing franchises. Some offer semi-absentee models and others make great side hustles

I like to say, with franchising, you can be anything you want to be when you grow up. I have worked with clients from a diverse array of industries with varied backgrounds who transition into something entirely different from what they used to do.

A recent example: An aspiring franchise owner came to me as a government regulator in the food space. He was seeking a change and wanted to start his own business. After conducting a needs analysis and having several conversations with him, I presented a commercial painting franchise. He began the process with a well-known painting franchise, which he found to be a great fit. The feeling was mutual, and he became a franchisee within a matter of weeks. How great is that?! He was able to find something completely different from what he was doing, allowing him to go into business for himself after a corporate career — a true success story for anyone considering a career change after corporate.

If you’re asking yourself, “Can I have a career change after corporate life?” — the answer is a resounding “yes,” especially with franchising paving the way. In fact, franchising continues to grow steadily in the U.S. economy. According to the International Franchise Association’s 2024 Franchising Economic Outlook, the number of franchise establishments is projected to grow by 1.9% to 821,000 units, adding over 15,000 new businesses this year alone. It’s clear: franchising is thriving — and offering new beginnings to many career changers.
