You’ll be surprised at how quickly AI catches on and starts sounding less like a robot and more like your digital twin.

Instead, use “you” to make it feel like a one-on-one conversation. It’s like turning a lecture into a friendly banter. Ask AI questions. Give it feedback and tweak its responses. This approach personalizes the interaction, creating a more engaging and tailored experience. Think of it as having a brainstorming session with a colleague rather than receiving a report. Encourage the AI to be more interactive, offering ideas and solutions, and don’t hesitate to challenge its suggestions. This way, you’re not just getting information but a conversation that evolves and adapts to your needs and insight.  

3. Switch to the Active Voice 

A passive voice is like that guest at the party who just doesn’t mingle. Let’s spice it up with an active voice. For instance, instead of saying, “The ball was thrown by me,’ go with “I threw the ball.” See the difference? It’s like choosing between a text from your bank and a message from a friend.

At its core, the metaphor of a dragon and its rider elegantly illustrates the relationship between AI and humans. Imagine AI as a dragon: immensely powerful, capable of incredible feats, yet also potentially dangerous if not properly managed. Just as a dragon in mythological tales needs a skilled rider to guide it, AI requires careful direction from humans. 

The phrase warns of the risks involved when AI is left unchecked. (Is that quote AI writing for you real? Is it giving you real facts or made-up ones?) Unrestrained, the power of AI can lead to unintended and potentially harmful consequences. It’s a reminder that, while AI can be a formidable tool, it must be controlled and directed with a clear understanding of its capabilities and limitations.

We also say, garbage in, garbage out. Give it a crap prompt, get a crap response. 

Instead, guide it. If it drafts an email for you, edit it and feed it back into the same thread with your edits. Let it know, “This is the email I sent for your learning.” It’s a learning cycle – the more you fine-tune, the sharper it gets. The more it sounds like you. Iterate, iterate, iterate – that’s the mantra, that is the secret sauce. You are teaching your large language model. 

Make your content relatable, not a thesis.

5. Tone Down the Jargon 

So, your AI analysis says you’re the Shakespeare of the digital age. Great, but remember, you’re writing for the many, not the few. Simplify. Make your content relatable, not a thesis. Your goal is to connect, not to impress with a fancy lexicon. I like to tell the large language model to target a specific grade level- usually about 10th. You want it to be about high school(ish). If you ask it about your writing style and it says you sound like a YALE grad, you should for sure rewrite it — the average reading level in the U.S. is 7th or 8th grade. 

Pro Tip: When you have a final result, ask the AI to read what you’ve written as if it were a {insert intended audience} and give you feedback on how they’d interpret/feel about it. 

6. Inject Personality 

Your AI should have a bit of sass and pizzazz. It’s not just about relaying information; it’s about doing it with flair. Throw in a joke, a witty remark, or a personal anecdote. Make your reader smile, think, or, even better, laugh. I will tell you that there are a lot of LAME jokes that it makes, worse than my dad’s dad jokes. AI jokes are often EASY to spot, so if you are not funny naturally, it may be hard for you not to make this sound like AI. 

7. Vary Your Sentence Structure: Keep It Spicy (Like Me!) 

Monotony? A total mood killer. Let’s spice things up. How? By mixing short, punchy sentences with longer, more descriptive ones. It’s like crafting a killer playlist – a little bit of rock, a dash of jazz, maybe some hip-hop. Each sentence brings a different beat, keeping your readers hooked and your writing alive with rhythm. 

It’s not just about varying sentence structure; it’s about infusing each line with personality.

But here’s where I, Ingrid, add my secret sauce. AI tries, sure, but it can sometimes be like that well-meaning friend who doesn’t get the party memo. So, I step in, often, turning the dial up on fun and quirkiness, because that is MY STYLE. My wit? That’s the catalyst.
