February 3, 2009 - Thunder Bay, Ontario – “We have sponsored a local team in the Thunder Bay Wheelchair Curling Association for the past two years,” says MEDIchair Thunder Bay owner Barb Ceresino. “So, when the opportunity arose to sponsor the inaugural Northern Ontario Wheelchair Curling Championships, we seized the opportunity. It’s a perfect fit for MEDIchair’s commitment to community involvement. We also thought it was important to support wheelchair curling which we believe has a huge opportunity to grow and develop locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.”

Dave Kawahara, a wheelchair curling organizer and coach at the Fort William Curling Club is thankful for the ongoing support that MEDIchair has provided at the grass roots level.

“MEDIchair has been sponsoring our league from it's inception in October 2006,” says Kawahara. “Not only have they given the league necessary equipment such as curling sticks and wheelchairs but their staff have also graciously volunteered their time. The Thunder Bay Wheelchair Curling Association is growing in members and our partnership with MEDIchair Thunder Bay has contributed to that growth.”

Regarding its sponsorship of the first Northern Ontario Wheelchair Curling Championships Ceresino explained, “Both MEDIchair Thunder Bay and MEDIchair Sudbury are proud to have sponsored these inaugural championships. We wish the winners continued success at the Canadian Championships in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia in March. We are excited to have played a role in this first ever event in Northern Ontario and look forward to supporting this initiative in the future.”

Wheelchair Curling made its début as a Paralympic sport at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino, Italy. It is sanctioned by the Canadian Curling Association and governed by the World Curling Federation.
